About us

Biosciences is one of the world’s foremost centres for learning in the biological sciences and one of the largest Divisions within UCL, undertaking a significant amount of research and teaching. The Division has a diverse portfolio addressing all areas of biology from protein interactions to cell function, organism development, genetics, population studies and the environment. Computational modelling approaches are frequently used alongside experimental research programmes and much of our research crosses traditional boundaries, including the relationship of biodiversity to the health of the planet. Activity is underpinned by high calibre science technology platforms and state of the art equipment. Educational activity includes a range of undergraduate programmes, an expanding number of Masters Programmes and a substantial number of postgraduate research students.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment for the delivery of teaching throughout the Biological Sciences degree programmes.

About the role

We seek to appoint a teaching lecturer in the Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment (GEE) at UCL. The appointment will complement and build on our existing teaching and research strengths in GEE and will be based at UCL’s Bloomsbury campus. You will primarily be responsible for the delivery of teaching throughout the Biological Sciences degree programmes (Biological Sciences; Biological Sciences: Computational Biology; Biodiversity and Conservation; Cell and Developmental Biology; Genetics; Human Genetics; Zoology). In particular, you will be tasked with leading and delivering our undergraduate “Plant Biology” module.

The postholder will also be expected to design and deliver lectures, tutorials, workshops, laboratory practical sessions and field courses in face-to-face settings, to a variety of class sizes. The applicant will lead a module targeted at second- and third-year undergraduates, assist where required with existing modules, develop and implement assessments and provide feedback to students, act as a personal tutor to undergraduate students and supervise research projects, both individual and collaborative. You will also actively participate in strategic curriculum development, coordinating programmes and modules, and supporting students. Time is also allocated within workloads for scholarship and research to underpin research-based education, and for your continuing professional development.

This appointment is subject to UCL Terms and Conditions of Service for Academic Staff. Please visit https://www.ucl.ac.uk/human-resources/policies/2021/jun/conditions-service-academic-staff for more information.

This role is eligible for hybrid working with a minimum of 80% on site.

You must hold a PhD (or equivalent) in an area related to our Biological Sciences degree programmes, as well as previous teaching and research experience within the Biosciences. We particularly welcome applicants with experience in plant biology (molecular, development, physiology or genomics). The successful individual should also have experience of designing and delivering research-based teaching at a world leading university.
