The Opportunity | Te Whiwhinga mahi
We have 3-year fixed-term, full-time (37.5 hours per week) opportunities for motivated Lecturers or Senior Lecturers of Built Environment Engineering to make significant impact and develop their career in teaching, research and service. We invite applications from academics and practitioners in Built Environment, Construction, or related disciplines who have the ambition, courage, and expertise to reimagine how we design and build the environments in which we live, work and play!
We are particularly interested in expertise in one or more of the following:
- Digital Design, Engineering and Construction
- AI in Design and Construction
- Construction Management for "Construction 5.0" environments
- Quantity Surveying
- Structural Engineering
- Design Management of complex engineering processes
- Built Environment Engineering pedagogies and practices
- Integrating Engineering Design with Advanced Technologies.
- Architectural Intelligence
- Ecological Sub/Urbanism
- Design Management and Advanced Professional Practice
Research at AUT is central - driving innovation, informing teaching and delivering real-world impact. You will be expected to advance research and practice across the wider school by building an active research profile through publication and dissemination, and by pursuing external funding. You will also engage with government, industry, professional bodies and the community, contributing to school and faculty activities.
We embrace practice-led, research-informed teaching for transformative student experiences that uplift communities, using digital resources to enhance learning. These positions support delivery of the School's built environment engineering and construction programmes across undergraduate and postgraduate study, including Civil, Construction and Architectural Engineering, and Project Management. You will deliver innovative, high-quality teaching and student supervision, and lead and develop courses within the built environment engineering curriculum.

About you | Ko wai koe
As an academic member of staff at AUT, you'll blend teaching, research and engagement to create outcomes that have real impact on the world. You'll work closely with students, collaborate across disciplines and contribute to projects alongside our industry and community partners. With room to experiment, develop your skills and refine your practice, you'll be supported to make a practical, impactful contribution to both learning and discovery.
You will bring an open, engaging, and collaborative approach, with the flexibility to respond to changing requirements, and actively contribute to a positive and collegial environment. You will demonstrate cultural humility, awareness, and respect when engaging with indigenous peoples and culturally diverse communities. Experience supporting indigenous, equity, or inclusion focused initiatives is highly desirable.
The selection criteria sought are:
1. Qualifications:
- A PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant Built Environment discipline, Architecture or a relevant discipline.
2. AI and the digital transformation of the construction industry
- Demonstrable interest in AI and the digital transformation of the construction industry, combined with nature-based solutions and a (re-)integration of intuitive human cultural factors in complex construction environments.
3. Teaching:
- An early career academic will ideally have at least some previous teaching assistant experience. (Lecturer)
- More experienced candidates will have previous lecturing experience, evidence of curriculum development and preferably experience supervising Master's and/or PhD students. (Senior Lecturer)
4. Research:
- An early career academic will have the basis of a solid research pipeline. (Lecturer)
- More experienced candidates will already have a more established research programme and a proven research track record with quality publications and ideally also success in external funding bids. (Senior Lecturer)
- Evidence of proactively pursuing external research income is desirable. (Lecturer)
- Evidence of securing or contributing to external research income is desirable. (Senior Lecturer)
