Legal Technologies Librarian (Instructor, Assistant Professor or Associate Professor)

This position provides support to the Law Library and Legal Analytics and Innovation Initiative (LAII) by being the subject matter expert on legal technology, law firm technology, and law and technology. This person is expected to teach, present, and generally work in this area in support of the College of Law, Law Library, and LAII curriculum. This position is a non-tenure-track faculty member in the College of Law with the status of Law Librarian.

Duties:

  • Teaches an introductory legal research course. May teach upper-level specialized legal research course(s).
  • Encouraged to teach classes on technology in the Legal Analytics and Innovation Initiative (LAII) certificate program. May teach, propose, and develop other technology or legal research courses.
  • Provides support to both the Law Library and LAII.
  • Develops and maintains an extensive working knowledge of current and emerging legal technologies, legal technology processes, artificial intelligence, and other related topics.
  • Participates in further developing LAII, including developing curricular and non-curricular programming.
  • Participates in the reference desk rotation. Provides reference services to members of the law school community, the university community, the local bench and bar, and the general public.
  • May also give subject-specific lectures for law and university faculty and students.
  • May supervise graduate research assistants (GRAs) as they complete projects for the Law Library and/or LAII.
  • Attends and actively participates in College of Law events and faculty governance, including serving on faculty committees as assigned and may serve as Faculty Advisor to law students.
  • Participates in collection development for the Law Library.
  • May participate in the development and maintenance of library research guides.
  • Attends and/or presents at professional meetings, including participation at the local, regional, and national levels, as well as volunteers to serve on committees for law librarian, legal technology, and other related professional organizations.
  • May engage in scholarly research and activity including but not limited to; writing or editing short articles, CALI lessons, scholarly research on topics of interest; presenting scholarly research at conferences or other professional gatherings; serving on an editorial or advisory board; etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education: Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited school. MLIS or MLS (Master’s in Information or Master’s in Library Science) from an ALA-accredited program; or an entering or currently enrolled student of an MLIS or MLS program.

Required Experience: 0-5 years relevant post-J.D. legal experience.

Preferred Qualifications/Experience:

  • Experience in the use of technology to further the practice of law, including in law firms, access to justice initiatives, and other related areas.
  • Demonstrated experience in instruction, programming, and class or curricular development, particularly in legal technology, legal research or other law-based courses.
  • Experience with data and data visualization tools, Python, or other coding languages.
  • Demonstrated interest in technology, emerging legal technology, and law and technology.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
