Hamilton Library at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa is the largest research library in the State of Hawai'i and serves the faculty and students of the University, as well as the community. The Science and Technology Reference Department provides academic resources and specialized research support to key campus science and technology units, including the College of Natural Sciences, the School of Nursing, School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology, College of Engineering, and College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience (CTAHR). The Department works on a hybrid model that blends traditional liaison duties with a collaborative, team-based approach. While subject librarians are responsible for the communication, expertise, and collection responsibilities for specific Colleges or Schools of the campus, the entire team shares instructional and reference duties across subjects.

CTAHR includes the following departments: (1) Family and Consumer Sciences, (2) Human Nutrition, Food and Animal Sciences, (3) Molecular Biosciences and Bioengineering, (4) Natural Resources and Environmental Management, (5) Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences, and Tropical Plant and Soil Sciences.

Duties and Responsibilities

As a member of the departmental team, the librarian will:

  • Collaborate on designing, delivering, and assessing information literacy instruction for a variety of courses and workshops.
  • Contribute to the department's reference and research consultation services.
  • Partner with colleagues on broader research support initiatives and projects.

As the liaison for CTAHR, the librarian will:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for communication and outreach.
  • Develop and maintain subject matter expertise to support specialized information needs in CTAHR related fields.
  • Manage collection development and budget for CTAHR subject areas.
  • Represent the library at the Agriculture Network Information Collaborative (AgNIC).

As a faculty member of the University, the librarian will:

  • Participate in committees and special projects as needed, and collaborate with faculty and staff in the Library and other units in the University.
  • Develop and lead new initiatives to enhance library services.

Librarians hold faculty status and are expected to meet requirements for tenure and promotion through professional development, travel, research, service, and other scholarly and institutional contributions.

Librarian II Minimum Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in library or information science from a program accredited by the American Library Association or from a college or university of recognized standing.
  • Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
  • Evidence of strong oral and written communication skills in English.

Librarian III Minimum Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in library or information science; in addition to the Master’s degree, 24 post-baccalaureate credits of academic study; and at least three years of appropriate experience.
  • Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
  • Evidence of strong oral and written communication skills in English.

Librarian IV Minimum Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in library or information science; a second Master’s degree in a specialized subject area; and seven years of appropriate experience or four years in the rank of Librarian III.

  • Evidence of strong oral and written communication skills in English.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Advanced coursework in a science and technology field.
  • Proven ability to create engaging learning experiences and instructional materials to support information literacy at the college or university level. Experience as the instructor of record for a credit-bearing course is highly desirable.
  • Experience providing reference and research assistance, preferably in science and technology fields in a college or university library.
  • Working knowledge of the academic research process and scholarly communication, preferably in a science or technology field.
  • Experience with AI technology in library services and/or AI literacy instruction.
