General Description
Under the direction of the Director, Learning Resources, the Library Assistant performs a variety of clerical and patron service duties in the College library.
This position is assigned to the Visalia Campus and is a Part-Time 10-month position.
Monday - Thursday, 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Saturday, 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Initial placement is $24.21 per hour.

Job Duties
Job duties of the Library Assistant include:
- Check books and materials in and out.
- Assist patrons with various machines and location of materials; answer routine questions and provide information and direct patrons to appropriate library personnel when necessary; assist students with using Readers Guide and other indexes.
- Assist in locating and gathering materials for students doing research as necessary.
- Assist in processing library materials as required; type pockets and cards for new magazines; return books to shelves.
- Issue library card numbers according to established guidelines.
- Assist in preparing overdue lists; telephone and send cards to patrons with overdue materials according to established procedures.
- Operate a variety of equipment including copier, microfilm reader/printer, date machine, typewriter, and computer.
- Assist in maintaining security of library materials as directed.
- Perform other duties reasonably related to the job classification
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience):
Any combination equivalent to: Sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Standard library methods and organization.
- Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
- Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
- Telephone techniques and etiquette.
- Modern office practices, procedures and equipment.
- Basic clerical skills.
Ability to:
- Provide assistance to students and staff in a tactful and courteous manner.
- Learn library practices and procedures and equipment.
- Learn the location of materials in the library.
- Perform routine clerical work.
- Type at an acceptable rate of speed.
- Work cooperatively with others.
- Train and provide work direction to others.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Working Conditions:
Environment
- Library environment.
- Constant interruptions.
- Contact with students, staff, supervisors, and the public.
Physical Abilities
- Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer and office equipment.
- Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
- Hearing and speaking to communicate with library patrons.
- Vision to read library materials.
- Reaching horizontally and above the shoulder to shelve and retrieve books.
- Carrying and lifting books weighing up to 30 pounds.
- Pulling and pushing book carts.
