Licensing Associate - KUCTC

The Licensing Associate will work under the direction of the Director of Licensing for the KU Center for Technology Commercialization (KUCTC), which serves all KU campuses, including the KU Medical Center in Kansas City. The mission of KUCTC is to manage discoveries and innovations from research to enhance their impact, benefit the public, and promote economic development.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Innovation Management: Establish and maintain relationships with researchers, educate KU faculty on intellectual property and technology transfer. Review, research, and assess new discoveries for commercial value, patentability, marketability, and technical understanding. Advise on patent prosecution and copyright protection, develop IP protection strategies, and manage KU's IP portfolio. Manage IP assets, provide feedback to researchers, and assist in seeking funding for innovations.
  • Business Development: Prepare non-confidential summaries for marketing, identify and engage companies in commercialization discussions, coordinate marketing materials on websites and channels, and represent KU at partnering events.
  • License Technologies: Develop terms for research collaborations and licensing, negotiate licenses with companies and startups.
  • Operations & Compliance: Handle data entry in technology transfer systems, assist staff with tasks, ensure compliance with the Bayh-Dole Act via iEdison.
  • Other: Participate in professional development and solve complex problems through data analysis.
  • Senior Licensing Associate Additional Responsibilities: Mentor junior team members, represent KUCTC at seminars, and manage the internship program.

Required Qualifications for Licensing Associate: Bachelor’s degree in life sciences, physical science, engineering, or related field, or a law degree with patent law experience; 1 year of IP evaluation, technology development, or commercialization experience.

For Senior Licensing Associate: Master’s degree in relevant field; 3 years of academic technology transfer experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Doctoral degree or JD with experience; experience in market research, technical analysis, business development, and licensing.

Skills: Strong communication, analytical, and interpersonal skills.

Salary Range: $75,000.00 - $115,000.00 annually.
