Lieutenant
Required Qualifications
- Ten (10) years of law enforcement experience, with at least two (2) years in a supervisory capacity.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Certified in defensive tactics, firearms proficiency, and current in CPR and First Aid.
- Must successfully pass a pre-employment physical examination.
- Must demonstrate:

- Dependability and the ability to perform under pressure
- A professional demeanor and appearance
- Must possess a valid state drivers license.
- Must have a valid FOID card (for Illinois residents).
- Must hold a valid Illinois police officer state certification or have the ability to update/renew certification if retired from law enforcement.
Preferred Qualifications
- Masters degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a related field.
- Ten or more years of supervisory experience in law enforcement.
- Proven executive management or command-level experience in a law enforcement agency.
- Law enforcement experience in a college or university setting.
- Bilingual communication skills, with the ability to speak Spanish preferred.
- Completion of a law enforcement executive leadership program, such as Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command or the FBI National Academy.
- Experience as a law enforcement trainer, field training officer, or training program coordinator.
Job Summary
Under the direction of the Chief of Campus Police, the Lieutenant is responsible for planning, directing, managing, and supervising the daily operations of an assigned area within the Police Department. This role involves coordinating departmental activities with other college divisions, local agencies, and external partners, while providing high-level administrative support to senior leadership as needed. The Lieutenant plays a key role in maintaining a safe and secure campus environment, protecting both people and property. This position also oversees department personnel and leads law enforcement operations as directed by the Chief of Police.
Specific Job Duties
Leadership & Supervision
- Directs, mentors, and supports all personnel under their leadership while promoting a culture of professionalism and service.
- Plans, assigns, and reviews the work of assigned staff; ensures compliance with laws, policies, and procedures.
- Evaluates staff performance, enforces departmental standards, and resolves personnel issues.
- Commands department personnel in accordance with departmental policy and under the direction of the Chief of Police or designee.
Campus Safety & Law Enforcement
- Enforces federal/state laws, local ordinances, and college policies, procedures, and regulations to maintain campus safety.
- Provides a safe learning and working environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
- Conducts investigations and responds to incidents as assigned; assists in resolving complaints and managing sensitive cases.
- Provides first responder emergency medical assistance and support as needed.
Emergency Management & Preparedness
- Leads planning and execution of emergency response training, safety drills, and disaster recovery initiatives.
- Responds to critical incidents and assumes command as necessary, ensuring effective coordination and compliance with emergency protocols.
- Participates in the development and implementation of campus emergency preparedness strategies.
Operations Management
- Develops and implements goals, objectives, policies, and operational priorities for assigned programs.
- Recommends and administers departmental policies and procedures.
- Maintains compliance with state law enforcement training standards and keeps accurate records with the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.
- Oversees departmental equipment inspections and ensures necessary corrective actions.
Performance Evaluation & Service Delivery
- Monitors and assesses the effectiveness and efficiency of department services.
- Recommends staffing adjustments and service improvements within policy guidelines.
- Supervises the preparation of reports and ensures the accurate maintenance of departmental records.
- Responds to internal and external communications promptly and professionally.
Community Engagement & Representation
- Acts as an ambassador for the police department at the college and community events.
- Builds and maintains positive relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the broader community.
- Demonstrates and promotes Morton Colleges core values: compassion, fairness, respect, responsibility, and tolerance.
Availability & Additional Duties
- Maintains 24/7 availability and readiness to respond to campus incidents or emergencies.
- Performs additional duties as assigned by the Chief of Campus Police or their designee.
Salary Range
$80-$85k annually
