Required Qualifications
- Demonstrates effective supervisory and leadership skills in a law enforcement environment.
- Communicates clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing.
- Uses computer applications proficiently to prepare reports, manage information, and support operational needs.
- Interacts professionally and effectively with the public, in person, online, via email and by telephone.
- Works independently and manages assignments and projects to timely completion.
- Demonstrates working knowledge of law enforcement policies, procedures, and organizational operations.
- Collaborates effectively with faculty, staff, students, and internal university departments to support departmental objectives.
- Coordinates effectively with external organizations and law enforcement agencies.
- Maintains flexibility to work varied schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as operational needs require.
- Possesses a minimum of two (2) years of experience as a police first‑line supervisor (Sergeant or equivalent).
- Holds a TCOLE Intermediate or Advanced Peace Officer certification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Holds an Advanced TCOLE Peace Officer certification.
- Demonstrates in‑depth knowledge of university policing operations and departmental general orders.
- Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a related field.
- Master’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a related field.
- Four (4) or more years of experience as a police first‑line supervisor.
- Two (2) years of experience as a Sergeant within the Texas State University Police Department or Texas State University System.
- Two (2) years of experience in a mid‑level police management role.
- Completion of at least eighty (80) hours of recognized law enforcement leadership training (e.g., LEMIT, FBI‑LEEDA, FBI Academy).
Job Description
Assist the Chief of Police with the administration, management and oversight of the University Police Department including rendering basic police services in an effort to reduce incidences of crime and enforce federal, state and local laws and ordinances.
Job Duties
- Provides regular updates to the Operations Captain regarding critical operational issues, internal affairs matters, and criminal investigations.
- Acts as a liaison with faculty, staff, students, and university leadership on departmental, administrative, and legislative matters affecting assigned areas.
- Represents the Operations Captain and serves as a point of contact for civic and university community groups, when appropriate.
- Participates in meetings with university personnel and external partners that may impact the command area.
- Receives, reviews, and distributes correspondence related to assigned operational areas.
- Responds to complaints and assigns or oversees internal affairs investigations, as required.
- Oversees projects and initiatives delegated by the Operations Captain.
- Coordinates and collaborates with other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
- Prepares, administers, and monitors budgets for designated functions or units.
- Serves as Chairperson for the Awards Committee and Accident Review Committee.
- Maintains documentation and archives related to critical incidents and newsworthy events.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Operations Captain.
