Limited Term Assistant Professor (Teaching) in Chinese (0.60 FTE)

DescriptionThe School of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures and Cultures at the University of Calgary invites applications for a 0.60 limited term position in Chinese, at the rank of Assistant Professor (Teaching). This is a 1-year term appointment with a July 1, 2026 anticipated start date. The area of specialization is open. The teaching of Chinese as an additional language is an asset.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses in Chinese culture and undergraduate courses in Chinese language in a twelve-month cycle, with a likely distribution of two courses in culture and two in language. They will be expected to participate in program activities and to participate in student language assessment, course placement, and mentoring. Service to the program and School is also expected.
To be considered, applicants should be at least ABD or possess a PhD by the time of hiring in a relevant area of Chinese studies. Preference will be given to candidates who possess a PhD by July 1, 2026. Demonstrated evidence of excellence in teaching at the post-secondary level, as well as native or near-native competence in Chinese are required. Teaching excellence can be demonstrated by presenting a record of relevant teaching experience at the post-secondary level, evidence of pedagogical innovation, and experience interacting with undergraduate students in Chinese and in English.
The Division of Chinese Studies and Japanese Studies is a research-intensive unit within the School of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures and Cultures with high standards in teaching, research, and community engagement.
