Responsibilities:
The Lineman Climbing Instructor will teach in multiple learning environments, including classrooms, indoor lab settings, and outside lab settings. The incumbent may conduct field training and/or supervise off-site training experience for current or prospective lineman program students. This position utilizes skills and knowledge of adult learning theories and learning styles to promote learner success and support the overall effectiveness of course instruction. The position is responsible for evaluating student knowledge and progress in skill attainment. This instructor may teach alone or with a team. Conducts a wide range of utility, cable, electric, and fiber optic power line technician training courses as well as general and technical safety classes for the lineman program. Special emphasis is on developing proper techniques and skills for pole climbing and ensuring students have the proper training and equipment to climb and work on telecom or utility poles safely. Upon successful completion of the program, the instructor will have imparted and assessed students’ skills with climbing, positioning, and transitioning techniques.
Requirements:
High School Diploma or GED and one-year of lineman climbing experience and experience operating utility equipment are required. Associate’s Degree in Electrical Systems Technology or related field preferred. Knowledge of regulations that apply to electrical linework (OSHA, NESC, etc.). Demonstrate a strong commitment to student learning. Demonstrated reception to using active and engaged teaching methods and technology in the classroom. Skilled and qualified in most aspects of electric power distribution system construction and maintenance in both an aerial and underground environment. Experience in a live (i.e., high voltage) environment using both live line tools and rubber-gloving techniques. Ability to climb utility poles using proper equipment. Ability to perform lifesaving rescue by lifting victim(s) from a utility pole and lowering the victim(s) to the ground using bucket and pole-top rescue techniques. Ability to remain stationary for long periods at a time as needed for travel. Ability to operate hand and power tools safely. Ability to work in adverse outdoor conditions during field instruction. Ability to operate standard office equipment including computer/keyboard/telephone. Team player with the ability to work with diverse groups of individuals. Excellent oral and written communication skills and organizational ability. Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software (preferably Microsoft Office). Demonstrate a commitment to supporting the mission of a comprehensive community college. Ability to walk, sit, stand, lift, push, pull, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, talk, hear, balance, and climb to a significant degree. Ability to lift and move items up to 120 pounds. Ability to have visual acuity and use repetitive motions with wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Ability to withstand extreme cold and heat, noise, vibration, and environmental hazards.
