Low Temperature Physicist for Sample Environment in Neutron Scattering
Shaping change: this is what drives us at Forschungszentrum Jülich. As a member of the Helmholtz Association with some 7,600 employees, we conduct interdisciplinary research into a digitalized society, a climate-friendly energy system, and a sustainable economy. We focus on the natural, life, and engineering sciences in the fields of information, energy, and bioeconomy. We combine this with expertise in high‑performance computing and artificial intelligence using unique scientific infrastructures.
The Jülich Centre for Neutron Science – Neutron Methods (JCNS-4) is looking for a physicist, preferably with a PhD, who is interested in technical work on the most modern setups to support the sample environment service team. The JCNS operates at the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ) in Garching near Munich a suite of high‑performance neutron scattering instruments. It provides access to these instruments for scientists from universities and research institutions in Germany and throughout the world. Within the user program, more than 1000 scientists visit the MLZ every year to perform experiments in the physical, chemical, biological, and materials sciences. The Sample Environment Team is one of the science service groups and plays a key role in the success of the user experiments.

Low Temperature Physicist for Sample Environment in Neutron Scattering
Your Job:
As a member of the Sample Environment Service Team, your main duty is the provision of a diverse range of equipment for the user (such as cryostats, magnets, and dew point generators), ensuring that the desired environmental parameters of the sample are met during the whole experiment. These parameters may include magnetic field, temperature, humidity, and other relevant factors. Through your work, you support the research of scientific guests at the MLZ. You will not be alone in this, but you will be supported by technicians and software developers. Furthermore, in cooperation with the scientists, you will expand our equipment pool in order to meet user needs and keep it up to standards. This can be achieved either through new purchase, or through the development of new equipment in partnership with our construction department in Jülich. At last, your duties extend to the maintenance of all these devices. Your focus area will be mainly the field of low and ultra-low temperatures, where you will primarily work with cryostats, cryo-magnets, and dilution inserts to achieve temperatures down to the mK range.
Your Profile:
- Master's degree in physics or in a similar field, preferably with a PhD
- You are well experienced in ultra-low temperatures, with the handling and maintenance of wet and dry cryostats and dilution inserts
- You are experienced in setting up diverse experiments independently
- You are familiar with high vacuum technology: diverse flange systems, pumps, and leak testing
- You work independently in the lab as well as in managing projects
- You can work hands-on and know how to use a soldering station, hardware tools, as well as use a computer
- You are willing to expand your knowledge to cover the entire range of sample environments at JCNS
- You are a good team-player when it comes to solving problems together and in an analytical way
- You are willing to participate in our on-call service
- Fluent command of written and spoken English with extensive vocabulary is required (at least B2 level)
- For daily life at work and at home, we would like you to acquire German language skills up to level B2
