About the College/Unit/Department: The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, founded in 1946, is dedicated to training future veterinarians, providing services to animal owners and veterinarians, and conducting investigations to improve the health of animals as well as people. The college benefits pets and their owners, food-producing animals, and wildlife by offering the highest quality hospital and diagnostic laboratory services. Equipped with the most technologically advanced facilities located on a university campus, the college is dedicated to safeguarding public health by studying emerging infectious diseases that affect both animal and human health.
Position Summary: The primary purpose and function of the Licensed Veterinary Technician is to support veterinarians in ensuring quality veterinary care, advocating for pets, and educating clients. The LVT III will also assist the senior veterinary and veterinary technician students with anesthetic management for a variety of surgical and diagnostic procedures.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies: Hands-on LVT experience in a clinical setting. Current GA LVT license. Work in a fast-paced environment while demonstrating excellent customer service, high degree of confidentiality, openness to teaching and providing consultation to a variety of stakeholders.
Physical Demands: Lift and carry up to 50 lbs. May sit, stand, stoop, bend and walk/move intermittently during the day on hard floor surfaces. Dealing with stressful situations. Manual dexterity sufficient to accurately work with small, delicate pieces of equipment or large heavy objects/containers/machinery.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Assist the senior veterinary and veterinary technician students with anesthetic management for a variety of surgical and diagnostic procedures.
- Knowledge and familiarity of capnography, pulse oximetry, and blood pressure management for anesthetized patients in a variety of species.
- Basic knowledge of the pharmacological effects of a variety of anesthetic and pain management agents.
- Performing and teaching competent catheter (venous, arterial, urinary) placement, regional anesthetic nerve blocks, and intubation skills in a variety of species.
- Ensuring the successful recovery of post-anesthesia patients.
- Accurate maintenance of controlled drug log and anesthesia patient records. (40% of time)
- Maintenance and care of anesthesia-related equipment. Stocking and maintenance of assigned crash cart.
- Consistent performance and oversight of: stocking the prep room, preparing the work stations, upkeep and repair of anesthetic machines and monitors, keeping the Anesthesia Prep room clean and orderly.
- Knowledge of drug handling, usage (both indications and contraindications), dosage, calculations, and routes of administration. Keep a check on expiration dates, daily inventory of controlled substances in accordance with DEA regulations and competently instruct others in drug use and dosage. Pre-medicating and inducing patients with anesthetic agents and monitoring patient status.
- Aiding senior veterinary students with anesthetic activities (induction, instrumentation and monitoring through extubation).
- Anticipate clinicians’ needs. Triage complications and identify and treat emergencies with permission of anesthesiologist on duty. (40% of time)
- Retrieve patient information and enter patient charges into hospital EMR system, Vetview.
- Retrieve medical drugs from CUBEX machine and follow protocols when disposing controlled drugs.
- Emergency/after hours duty on a rotating basis. (20% of time)
