Job Summary
Auburn University is seeking experienced machinists at all levels who are nationally certified as a machinist with additional specialties in teaching/instruction, Occupational Safety, Mechatronics and Industry 4.0/5.0/6.0 technologies. This position integrates teaching, occupational safety, mechanical design, technical drawings, manual skills, mathematics, and computer programming to produce high-quality components in limited production runs, advanced prototypes, qualified technicians and professional engineering candidates.
Essential Functions
Safety & Supervision
- Enforce OSHA machining safety standards, including SDS, LOTO, and electrical safety.
- Serve as a Safety Officer and member of the ICAMS Safety Council.
- Supervise and instruct students and junior machinists in safe shop practices.
Instruction & Leadership
- Teach NIMS Level 1-4 machining skills to university students and industry professionals.
- Lead workshops on CAD/CAM, metrology, reverse engineering, advanced machining and Industry 4.0/5.0
- Lead teams on industry field trips and host/lead workshops for both industry and academia.
- Work with students, faculty and industry to develop unique prototypes and limited production runs.
Machining & Fabrication
- Operate manual and CNC machines (milling, turning, drilling, grinding, EDM, Swiss, 5-axis milling, complex lathes with live tooling and state of the art 5 axis waterjet).
- Set up and troubleshoot CNC programs using G-code; adjust tool and part offsets. Troubleshoot equipment.
- Perform all levels of classic manual machining and metrology using calipers, micrometers, gauge blocks, and microscopes. Perform all levels of maintenance on all the machines and equipment in the facility.
Design & Programming
- Create and interpret detailed engineering drawings, including GD&T standards.
- Documented training in GD&T standards
- Use CAD/CAM software (Fusion 360, SolidWorks, MasterCAM, AutoCAD PowerMill) for design and manufacturing programs.
- Program and operate coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) and 3D scanners.
Quality & Troubleshooting
- Review and correct engineering drawings for manufacturability.
- Troubleshoot machining and programming issues across various platforms.
- Certify GD&T drawings and ensure surface finish quality using precision instruments.

Minimum Qualifications
Candidates will be assigned job levels based on qualifications.
- Machinist I: Associate's degree in Advanced Manufacturing, Machining, or Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machining. Salary Range: $41,230-$61,850
- Sr. Machinist: Associate's degree in Advanced Manufacturing, Machining, or Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machining and 2 years of experience in Advanced Manufacturing, Machining, or Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machining. Salary Range: $43,610-$69,780
- Master Machinist: Associate's degree in Advanced Manufacturing, Machining, or Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machining and 4 years of experience Advanced Manufacturing, Machining, or Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machining. Salary Range: $51,970-$88,350
- Lead Machinist: Associate's degree in Advanced Manufacturing, Machining, or Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machining and 6 years of Advanced Manufacturing, Machining, or Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machining experience. Salary Range: $63,420-$114,160
Minimum Skills and Abilities
- Excellent demonstrated proficiency in manual and CNC machining.
- Experience with CAD/CAM software and metrology tools.
- Strong understanding of safety regulations and instructional capabilities.
- Experienced, documented instructor preferred
- Ability to lead, teach, and collaborate in a dynamic academic-industrial environment.
Minimum License and Certifications
Machinist I
Required within a year of employment:
- NIMS Certification in Milling 1
- NIMS Certification in Turning 1
Sr. Machinist
Required at hire:
- NIMS Certification in Milling 1 and 2
- NIMS Certification in Turning 1 and 2
- Qualified as CNC 5 axis Operator-Required
- Qualified as an Electrostatic Discharge Machine Operator
Master Machinist
- NIMS Certification in Milling 1 and 2
- NIMS Certification in Turning 1 and 2
- Qualified as CNC 5 axis Operator
- Qualified as an Electrostatic Discharge Machine Operator
- Entry into this level requires an employee to pass the Auburn University CNC 5 Axis Specialist and the Conversational Grinding Machine Operator examination.
Lead Machinist
Required at hire:
- NIMS Certification in Milling 1 and 2
- NIMS Certification in Turning 1 and 2
- Qualified as CNC 5 axis Operator
- Qualified as an Electrostatic Discharge Machine Operator
- GD&T Technologist Level Exam
Desired Qualifications
Preference will be shown to candidates with the following certifications:
