Position Description
Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of Plant Operations, the Maintenance Electrician participates in the maintenance effort in all facets of electrical supply, distribution, service, and coordination and oversight of work done by outside contractors.
Demonstrates the ability to assist with a variety of mechanical, HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, carpentry, and general maintenance troubleshooting and team repair responsibilities and tasks. Must have the ability to lift and move materials and tools and operate power tools in a safe and proper manner. Position is considered Essential Personnel. Must be computer literate. A current valid driver’s license is required. Responsible for upkeep of assigned vehicle. Personal hand tools required. High school diploma or GED.
Position Responsibilities
- Performs tasks in the maintenance, troubleshooting, repairing, monitoring, and installing of electrical and electronic circuits, equipment and systems as well as assists in the coordination of work utilizing outside contractors.
- Maintains electrical circuitry, interior and exterior lighting, repairs/diagnosis of all types of equipment including but not limited to minor elevator repairs, kitchen equipment, lawn equipment/tools, HVAC equipment, fire alarm systems, campus lighting, emergency lighting, and generator and security systems.
- Assists in the maintenance, troubleshooting and repair work on, and evaluation of all equipment and systems as assigned including plumbing; mechanical; and heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment as well as electrical tasks, utilizing general knowledge and basic experience and judgment to plan and complete tasks. Performs all work in accordance with local, state and national codes.
- Assists other mechanics as necessary on repairs and/or installation of various mechanical, building, carpentry, electrical and environmental equipment and systems plus general facility maintenance tasks.
- Maintains all electrical equipment and interacts/coordinates work with outside vendors as required.
- Installs new circuits, circuit panels, fire alarm systems, site lighting, interior lighting, and related equipment for new construction, renovation, repair and remodeling projects.
- Completes work requests as assigned and closes them upon completion. Initiates new work orders for additional work as observed and identified.
- Assists in maintaining inventory, parts control and authorized ordering of electrical, electronic and lighting components, parts and materials.
- Participates in Preventive Maintenance (PM) work on all electrical systems and equipment including responsibilities for testing and maintaining emergency lighting and generators on a monthly basis, and the proper recording and maintenance of all required documentation.
- As assigned, maintains university vehicle and position related tools and equipment. Maintains work areas in the field and in the shop in an orderly and clean manner, maintaining a safe work area. Performs tasks in a safe manner, attending safety training programs and courses as directed.
- Accepts responsibilities as Essential Personnel including but not limited to:
- Participates in the “on-call” rotation as scheduled (after hours and weekends).
- Be available for duty for inclement weather safety responsibilities (snow, ice, heavy rain, high winds, etc.) including removal of snow, ice, branches and debris from roads, paths, walkways, buildings, parking lots, etc.; the treatment of roads, walkways, stairs and lots with salt, ice-melt, and/or anti-skid and related tasks. Most duties will be done utilizing vehicles and equipment but some tasks will require manual, physical hard work.
- Work during campus closures.
- Be available for non-weather related occurrences of weekend work.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Is required to be available for and accept "on-call" coverage within a rotating schedule.
- Maintains professional growth and development by attending educational, technical and training programs, seminars and courses through self-identification of these opportunities as well as with direction from the Director of Plant Operations.
- Responds to emergency elevator service calls.
- Possesses and provides basic, position- related, personal hand tools.

Qualifications
Knowledge, Skill, Experience Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Good trade knowledge in electrical with basic knowledge of plumbing, mechanical, and heating ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration is required.
- Two or more years of total experience as an electrician or four or more years as a Maintenance Mechanic/Apprentice Electrician is required as is familiar with standard electrical concepts, practices, procedures and codes. Vocational, trade or technical school training is beneficial.
- Able to establish and maintain good working relationships with other maintenance, technical, university staff and contractor personnel.
- Strong written, oral, organizational and basic computer skills.
- Detail oriented with ability to manage work requests and projects.
- Able to work with minimal direct supervision.
- Able to operate hand and power tools as well as climb ladders and use a 32-foot aerial lift safely.
Supplemental Information
Staff, full-time, hourly, regular, 12 months/year, 40 hours/week, Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm, overtime and on-call status are required as requested by Director of Plant Operations or Executive Director of Facilities and Campus Services.

In accordance with state laws, Act 73 of 2007, Act 153 of 2014, Act 168 (relating to the Child Protective Services Law), school employees of Eastern University who will have "direct contact with children" must complete the background check process prior to employment. Results must be submitted within ten days of receipt.
