Job Summary

Maintenance Mechanics perform maintenance and repair tasks on a variety of equipment and machinery. Use hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot and repair issues. Work with mechanical, electrical, and/or hydraulic systems. Ensure proper wiring in construction or repairs and ensure mechanical systems are in compliance with local or national regulatory requirements. Perform tests and locate potential mechanical hazards for repair. May inspect and repair mechanical systems in equipment or machinery and document results.

Responsibilities

Maintenance Mechanic I: Perform maintenance and repair tasks on a variety of equipment and machinery. Use hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot and repair issues. Work with mechanical, electrical, and/or hydraulic systems. Ensure proper wiring in construction or repairs and ensure mechanical systems are in compliance with local or national regulatory requirements. Perform tests and locate potential mechanical hazards for repair. May inspect and repair mechanical systems in equipment or machinery and document results. Performs routine tasks as directed and under close supervision.

  1. Conduct routine inspections and scheduled maintenance of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems.
  2. Diagnose and repair system malfunctions, including pumps, motors, fans, compressors, boilers, CRUs, & other building systems.
  3. Work with Energy and Sustainability to maintain and calibrate building systems to ensure optimal performance and energy efficiency.
  4. Monitor building automation systems (BAS) and respond to system alerts and failures.
  5. Use diagnostic tools and software to identify and resolve system inefficiencies.
  6. Assist in the installation and commissioning of new mechanical systems and equipment.
  7. Coordinate with contractors and vendors during construction or renovation projects.
  8. Utilize work management system software to maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs.
  9. Actively step up and provide suggestions and recommendations on repairing or replacing aging equipment and assets.
  10. Respond promptly to emergency maintenance calls and system failures. Participate in on-call rotation for after-hours support.
  11. Work collaboratively with individuals internal and external to the department.
  12. Adhere to OSHA, state, and University safety protocols in all maintenance activities.
  13. Participate in ongoing training and certification programs.
  14. This position is considered ‘critical staff’ and is expected to participate in emergency management programs. This is an Entry-Level position in the Support track.

Minimum Qualifications

EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor’s degree = 4 years of directly related work experience). Maintenance Mechanic II: Requires at least 1 year of related experience. Maintenance Mechanic III: Requires 3+ years of related experience.

Preferences

Depending on the area of assignment, three years of maintenance and repair experience, or equivalency, in one or more of the following areas is required: pipefitting; heating, air conditioning, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience), and steam-operated systems; pneumatic and electronic building control systems; plumbing and refrigeration systems; commercial/industrial laundry equipment; sterilizing equipment; gas/diesel engines and generators; kitchen and cafeteria equipment; mechanical and electrical troubleshooting; and welding. The ability to respond appropriately to emergency situations, effective human relations and communications skills, and demonstrated computer proficiency are essential.

Incumbents who specialize in refrigeration and air conditioning systems must complete a two-year vocational schooling program; possess Environmental Protection Agency certification with a Universal permit to handle refrigerants; and demonstrate a high level of technical expertise. A boiler license may be required for some positions.
