To add to our esteemed staff, we are seeking an experienced Manager, Lab Services/Safety for our Pleasantville, NY (Westchester County) campus.

Responsibilities:

The Manager for Laboratory Services and Safety position will supervise and organize the chemical and physical operations of the Chemistry and Physical Sciences Laboratories by providing solutions, preparations, and directing student technicians. The Manager will also be responsible for evening lab activities and/or overseeing a part-time evening lab coordinator when that position is reinstated. The manager’s responsibility includes maintenance and calibration of equipment, monitoring and procurement of inventory levels, and maintaining the standard operating procedure (SOP) for the use of equipment and instruments.

The Manager will also serve as the designated Laboratory Chemical Hygiene Officer, Radiation Officer, and Budget Manager for the Chemistry department. They are responsible for lab operations, environmental/health & safety programs, and financial operations.

Position Duties:

  • Self-engaged in the actual preparation and testing of solutions and SOP for experiments and maintenance, calibration, and optimal performance of lab instruments.
  • Work with faculty to propose and develop/ oversee new undergraduate lab exercises while ensuring regulatory compliance is enforced.
  • Monitor inventory levels to maintain adequate quantities, order supplies as necessary, and maintain contact with vendors and Dyson Finance Office, i.e., maintenance contracts, service contracts, and repair contracts.
  • Organize and prepare lab exhibits for various events around science department initiatives, such as fall and spring open house events.
  • Develop, implement, and communicate environmental, health, radiological, and safety programs that ensure Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Department of Health (DOH), Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulatory compliance. These programs are reviewed annually.
  • Annually review and update chemical inventory for the Fire Marshall and the Environmental, Health, and Safety (EH&S) Director. Compile annual capital equipment lists to ensure that lab resources are updated.
  • Implement and manage the Department Hazardous Waste Program. Biannually prepare hazardous waste material for disposal, including logging all materials placed in hazardous waste.
  • Department liaison to the University Environmental, Health, and Safety Director.
  • Conduct informal instructional and research lab safety audits.
  • Preparation of budgets, review, and reconciliation of any lab-related expenses.
  • Supervise the maintenance of the equipment and laboratory facilities to ensure safe operating conditions.
  • Utilize various systems for executing financial processes; i.e., purchase requests, reconciling accounts/budget.
  • File all facility and IT requests for labs.
  • Provide training for Student Aides/ Faculty/ Staff in health, safety protocols, and compliance to ensure that all such protocols are followed.
  • Assign and approve work in UKG for 4-8 Student Lab Technicians and the afternoon to an Evening PT Lab coordinator when appointed to ensure that undergraduate and graduate level lab experiments and the responsibility for instrument upkeep are covered completely and accurately.
  • Provide instruction, training for, and oversee Student Technicians on the maintenance of equipment and solution preparations, and lab activities. The Manager is also responsible for the evening functions.
  • Performs other such duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry or biochemistry required. Master's degree in the area of Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or in Industrial Hygiene and Safety preferred.
  • At least three years of prior academic laboratory experience in an administrative capacity.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations as they apply to academic institutions, specifically OSHA and EPA regulations.
  • Experience working with young adults.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel or equivalent software for financial management, reporting, and routine task automations.
