BACKGROUND

In 2022, the Alan Turing Institute launched the Centre for Emerging Technology and Security (CETaS), which is part of the Institute’s Defence and National Security Grand Challenge.

The Centre’s mission is to strengthen UK security through pioneering research and insights on emerging technologies.

We help to protect the UK by:

  1. Enabling innovation - Advising the national security community on the effective and responsible use of AI capabilities
  2. Assessing global threats and opportunities - Such as insights on geopolitical competition or threats from AI-enabled disinformation
  3. Shaping policy - Such as understanding public attitudes, developing frameworks, or advising on legislative changes

We are a team of researchers, technologists, former policymakers and practitioners with multidisciplinary expertise in fields such as artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, criminology, law and ethics.

The Managing Editor will lead the end-to-end delivery of CETaS publications, ensuring outputs are delivered to consistently high standards, proactively identifying new publications, ensuring content and digital engagement activity supports the Centre’s strategic objectives and thought leadership.

Eligibility for Security Check (SC) clearance is a requirement for this role. Eligibility criteria and further information on the process can be found on the UK Government security vetting website.

DUTIES AND AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • Lead and manage the CETaS publications pipeline, setting priorities and ensuring the timely delivery of high-quality, strategically aligned outputs
  • Ensure all CETaS research outputs meet high editorial, accessibility and publication standards through expert copy-editing and quality assurance
  • Proactively identify and commission new publications on emerging technology and security issues, working closely with the CETaS research team to shape outputs of highest relevance and impact
  • Design and develop visual content to support research outputs, including figures and graphics
  • Develop and deliver tailored digital content to support CETaS communications and engagement objectives, maximising the reach and impact of research outputs
