Fully Funded PhD Position in Structural Biology of Eukaryotic Translation Control
We are inviting applications for a fully funded PhD position in Petr Tesina's Research Group at CEITEC (Central European Institute of Technology), Masaryk University in Brno, Czechia — a leading European centre for life sciences with state-of-the-art research infrastructure.
WHY APPLY?
- Competitive ERC-funded salary and a high quality of life
- This position comes with an attractive ERC-funded salary (starting at 30,000 CZK net, with yearly increase), that will allow you to retain 40% of your income for leisure and personal expenses. Located in one of the safest regions in Europe, Brno pairs an exceptionally welcoming international research community with an affordable cost of living that lets your PhD salary go much further. On top of that, you'll enjoy a generous benefits package: 6 weeks of paid holiday, medical insurance, meal and pension contributions, a Multisport card, mental health care, sports lessons directly on campus, and a kindergarten close to the campus.
- Cutting-edge research in a fascinating field
- The PhD project centers on a fundamental question in molecular biology: How is human translation controlled at the structural level?
- You will investigate the structures of ribosomal complexes involved in eukaryotic translation control, at the interface of structural biology, biochemistry, and molecular biology. The lab has recently secured substantial third-party funding — including an ERC Starting Grant and an EMBO Installation Grant so your research and training will be well supported for years to come.
- Check out our lab page for more information.
- Develop a powerful, multidisciplinary skillset
- You'll have access to state-of-the-art cryo-EM instruments at our local core facility, with comprehensive cryo-EM training provided — no prior cryo-EM experience required. As part of your PhD training, you will gain hands-on experience with advanced techniques, including CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing, protein and RNA biochemistry and biophysics methods. You'll also develop critical soft skills in scientific communication, collaboration, and project management—preparing you for a future in academia, biotech, or beyond.
- Supportive, international environment
- CEITEC MU offers flexible working hours, Welcome Office support with visa and relocation assistance before and after arrival, Grant Office and PhD Committee backing, and a vibrant calendar of workshops, conferences, lectures, and community events. As a PhD student in an EMBO Young Investigator lab, you gain direct access to exclusive international travel and exchange grants, subsidized EMBO courses, and priority access to cutting-edge core facilities across Europe.
WHO SHOULD APPLY?
We're looking for a creative, independent, and motivated candidate with:
Must-have: MSc or equivalent degree (preferably in Life Sciences), strong interest in structural biology, strong spoken and written English
Nice-to-have: hands-on experience with structural biology, biochemistry or molecular biology methods; programming skills; experience with human or yeast cell cultures are all a strong plus
A background in structural biology and translation is the ultimate fit — but above all, we value curiosity, dedication, and a collaborative mindset.
Ready to join us?
Applications are open until 08.01.2027 - but apply as soon as possible, as this is a rolling review and candidates are assessed in the order applications are received. Start in the position is expected during Q1 2027 (negotiable).
