About This Opportunity
The Mass Spectrometry Platform Manager leads the operation and optimisation of IMB’s cutting-edge mass spectrometry suite—overseeing equipment, technical and analytical services, and driving high-quality user training and support. This role is central to enabling researchers to generate world-class data and advancing innovative scientific discoveries.
The IMB Mass Spectrometry Platform is home to a suite of state-of-the-art mass spectrometry, high-performance liquid chromatography, and robotic instrumentation, that has been refined and optimised to investigate biological systems in a high-throughput qualitative and quantitative manner.
The Platform Manager provides direct management and oversight of the suite of IMB Mass Spectrometry equipment, technical and analytical services, user training and support.
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Manage the state-of-the-art IMB Mass Spectrometry Platform, ensuring high-quality and cost-effective services for users.
- Develop and implement complex and novel mass spectrometry workflows for detecting, characterising and quantifying biomolecules across diverse biological matrices.
- Provide expert technical advice, research support and user training, including: supporting the various stages of research, from concept through to experimental approach, including design, methodology, data acquisition and data processing, and project reporting and publication;
- Provide technical advice, guidance and review of cutting-edge mass spectrometry developments to support future grant applications (e.g., ARC LIEF) for next-generation systems and capabilities.
- Continually assess asset lifecycles and usage, identifying equipment for retirement and/or replacement.
- Prepare and manage budgets that sustain Institute and Platform objectives.
- Maintain stakeholder communications for the platform, including digital and web channels.
- Lead ongoing strategic and operational planning, including regular reporting on performance, actions and future directions.
- Liaise with instrument engineers, manufacturers and technical staff to ensure equipment is optimised with minimal downtime.
- Engage with external clients, industry and collaborators to maximise the Platform’s performance, income and output.
About You
- Postgraduate qualifications in chemistry, biochemistry or analytical science, together with extensive experience in mass spectrometry, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
- Demonstrated understanding of the operation of mass spectrometry equipment and associated scientific instruments, including technical skills in maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Broad knowledge of mass spectrometry workflows and applications. Including knowledge and experience in protein, peptide, lipid and small molecule analytical applications and data processing workflows.
- Knowledge of nano, micro and analytical flow HPLC, plus other chromatography techniques, including capillary isoelectric focussing, ion exchange and size exclusion.
- High level of computer competency, including ability to use systems supporting mass spectrometry including experience in data processing software for peptide, protein, lipid and small molecule identification, characterisation and quantitation, for example SCIEX OS, MultiQuant, LipidView, Protein Pilot, DIA-NN, Skyline, Peaks Studio etc.
- Demonstrated experience of applying innovative and contemporary approaches in mass spectrometry.
- Strong understanding of health and safety practices and requirements relevant to working in chemical and instrument laboratories.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with autonomy under broad direction.
- Excellent communication skills with experience engaging a wide range of stakeholders, combined with a strong attention to detail.
