Selection process
"Applications accepted for consideration will be assigned to the broad field of study associated with the doctoral program indicated in the application.
The evaluation of applications will take place in two phases:
Phase 1:
In this first phase, a maximum of 32 applications will be selected based on the candidate’s average academic grade, calculated in accordance with the provisions of Annex I and following the criteria detailed below:
- Five (5) applications will be selected for each of the broad fields of study.
- Two (2) applications will be selected for the field of women’s and gender studies.
- Two (2) applications will be selected for the field of sciences applied to navigation, maritime transport, or naval engineering.
- The remaining applications will be selected exclusively based on the average grade point average, regardless of their field or area of study.
If any major field of study or research area does not reach the expected number of applications, the vacant spots will be filled with the highest-ranked applications based on their overall grade point average.
The results of Phase 1 of the selection process will be standardized on a scale of up to 7 points, with 7 points awarded to the highest score.
The provisional list of applications selected in this phase, along with the calculated average score, will be published on the University of Cantabria’s website. The lists will be published by broad areas of knowledge and research tracks (the Women and Gender track and the Applied Sciences for Navigation, Maritime Transport, and Naval Engineering track).
Starting the day after publication, there will be a ten-day period to file appeals against this decision. Once any appeals have been addressed, the final list will be published on the same website.
Phase 2:
The evaluation of the applications definitively selected in Phase 1 will be conducted by external experts from outside the University of Cantabria, appointed by the Research Committee.
Phase 2 will have a maximum score of 3 points. Each application will be evaluated by at least two external evaluators per major area, applying the criteria and scoring scale detailed below:
- Up to 1 point: Thesis project proposal. The evaluation will focus on the formulation of clear and realistic objectives, as well as the project’s impact, the novelty of the objectives and methodology, and the project’s feasibility given the available resources. For applications submitted under the “Women’s and Gender Studies” research track, consideration will be given to whether the project incorporates the gender dimension as a central element of the research, as indicated in Article I.1.
- Up to 1 point.—Curriculum Vitae covering the last seven years of the person listed as the thesis advisor who has committed to serving in that capacity. No achievements or contributions prior to the last seven years will be considered. The advisor’s scholarly output, leadership, and experience in the research topic will be evaluated. The supervisor’s past experience in supervising doctoral theses and the outcomes of those theses will also be evaluated. In doing so, special attention will be given to the supervisor’s track record over the past seven years, always taking into account the supervisor’s current professional stage without penalizing emerging researchers.
- Up to 1 point: The recipient group’s scientific track record over the past seven years and its capacity for research training. The team’s relevance and contribution to research activities related to the submitted proposal will be assessed, as reflected in articles published in scientific journals, books, book chapters, papers presented at conferences, patents granted or licensed, and doctoral dissertations completed within the group, as well as national or international projects and agreements with companies or institutions in which team members serve as principal investigators.
The final score will be the sum of the scores from Phase 1 and Phase 2.
In the event of a tie, priority will be given to the candidate with the highest score in Phase 1. If the tie persists, the scores obtained in Phase 2 will be considered in the following order:
- Highest evaluation of the project proposal.
- Best resume of the principal investigator.
- Best track record of the research group.
If, after applying these criteria, the tie still persists, it will be resolved by a random drawing."
