General Position Description: Shift coordinator within the Department, responsible for coordinating and monitoring day-to-day security operations during an assigned shift.

Flexible Work Arrangement: Fully On-site: Employee performs all of their job duties at a Valencia College location, with flexibility in the work schedule, if appropriate.

Description of Job Function:

  1. Is knowledgeable of, and performs all job functions inherent to Valencia College a Security Officer.
  2. Acts as informal shift leader under the authority of the Security Field Supervisor and assumes shift leadership in the absence of direct supervision due to absence.
  3. Receives information and special instructions from the Security Supervisor/Assistant Director, and Chief of Security.
  4. Coordinates activities and events with the Security Supervisor/Assistant Director, and Chief of Security.
  5. Deploys shift personnel and resources to meet the operational objectives.
  6. Acts as a role model for all officers, maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and appearance.
  7. Completes assigned tasks promptly and proactively seeks out work in identified areas of opportunity.
  8. Consistently communicates effectively and professionally both inside and outside the department.
  9. Periodically assesses Security Officers' knowledge and abilities and assesses if remedial training is necessary in areas of opportunity.
  10. Is a technical expert of all security technology and applications utilized by the security department; surveillance (milestone); Access Control (DNA/Open Access); Incident Reporting (Larimore); Mass Notification Systems (Blackboard Alerts, Alertus, Big Voice); and Administration Services (ID Cards and Bosscars).
  11. Provides oversight on routine emergency and safety system checks.
  12. Performs investigations of incidents occurring on college property.
  13. Alert to the normal positioning, functioning, or operation of security personnel, and emergency and safety systems.
  14. Responds to emergencies of a medical, criminal and mechanical nature.
  15. Implements and conducts departmental orientation of new hires.
  16. Capable of teaching Security Officers with a wide variety of knowledge bases and learning abilities.
  17. Performs other duties as assigned.

Drivers License Requirement: REQUIRED: Must possess valid Florida Driver's License. Employee will be required to operate a college vehicle, including but not limited to on and between campuses and in the local community, in order to perform the essential job functions.

Required Minimum Education: High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

Required License/Certification: State of Florida certification/license that meets or exceeds Class "D." Must possess valid Driver's License. Employee will be required to operate a college vehicle, including but not limited to on and between campuses and in the local community, in order to perform the essential job functions.

Preferred Type of Experience: Experience as a security officer or in a position with similar duties.

Preferred Licenses/Certification: Certification in First Aid/CPR.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Knowledge of Valencia College security operations and procedures.
  2. Ability to communicate effectively.
  3. Ability to work different shifts and different campus locations; to enforce regulations consistently; and to describe people and objects in accurate detail.
  4. Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer.

General Working Conditions: This job operates in a professional office environment and throughout the College's worksites and grounds. Within the professional office environment, the employee will routinely operate standard office equipment including but not limited to computers, keyboards, mouse, phones, photocopiers, printers, scanners, filing cabinets and fax machines. The noise level in the office work environment is usually quiet and occasionally moderate.While operating outside of the office environment, the employee may be exposed to elements including but not limited to wet/humid weather, extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and unpleasant odors. The role may also involve hazards or physical risks, which require comprehending and following basic safety precautions and may require Personal Protection Equipment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally loud. Typical physical competencies include but are not limited to remaining stationary, moving, ascending/descending, positioning self, reaching, lifting/moving objects weighing between 5-100 pounds. This job also entails frequently communicating, discerning and exchanging information, detecting and perceiving objects up close, at a distance, and the ability to adjust focus. Cognitive abilities include but are not limited to discretion, judgment, reasoning, memory, learning, maintaining confidentiality, comprehension, problem solving, and decision-making. The typical work environment, physical and cognitive demands listed above are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Job specific working conditions: Must have the physical conditioning necessary to perform the job. According to section 493.6108, physical fitness for certain types of guards is certified by a doctor who is considered qualified under the provisions of Chapter 458 or 459. Furthermore, under provisions in Chapter 493 of the Florida State Code, applicants who are severely overweight or disabled to the point where it affects job performance may not be eligible to become a guard. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Will be required to operate a college vehicle, including but not limited to on and between campuses and in the local community, in order to perform the essential job functions.
