About the Project
Our Masters by Research programmes give you the opportunity to gain experience of independent research and a chance to solve current environmental challenges, guided by an expert in the field.
The Department of Environment and Geography is pleased to offer a tuition fee award for a candidate eligible to pay fees at the Home/UK rate and enrolled on one of the following Masters by Research programmes starting in September 2026:
- Environmental Economics and Environmental Management
- Environmental Science
- Human Geography and Environment
- Physical Geography
- Environment

We have a list of currently available projects; alternatively if you have another research idea that you would like to pursue, you’re encouraged to contact a relevant member of staff to explore developing this into a Masters by Research project.
Postgraduate research
While the main focus of your Masters by Research will be your project, you will access training through a Masters-level module in research skills and attend university training courses in a wide range of relevant areas. You will also become a member of at least one of our five challenge area research groups and join other academic and social events alongside our PhD students and staff. We will provide you with a research training and support grant of £1000 to support your project. You will also have access to a desk and a PC in one of the department’s postgraduate offices for the duration of your programme. Your project will culminate in the production of a thesis of up to 40,000 words.
If you wish to be considered for this funding award, you need to submit an application for the relevant Masters programme by Wednesday 22nd July at 5pm AND this Master fees application form. We encourage you to speak to your potential supervisor before you apply. You can apply for the course via the relevant course page on our website.
If your chosen supervisor wishes to support your application, they will invite you to an online interview, which will take place by Friday 14th August. They may choose at this stage to nominate you for the Masters tuition fee award. Nominations will be considered by an academic panel in the Department and the successful candidate will be notified of the outcome by 21st August 2026.
The start date of the Masters would be 21 September 2026
Awards will be made on the basis of academic merit and financial need. Applicants should have, or be expecting to achieve, a 2:1 undergraduate degree in a relevant, related discipline. International equivalent qualifications are accepted (but please note the fee award is only available for Home/UK students).
