Position Announcement
Job Title:
Mathematics FacultyMesalands Community College seeks a dedicated, student-focused Mathematics Faculty member to teach and support mathematics courses across developmental, general education, and program-specific curricula. The faculty member will deliver instruction in multiple modalities—including in-person, hybrid, online, and correctional education settings—and contribute to curriculum development, student advising, and institutional assessment.
This position supports the College’s mission to serve a diverse rural student population and prepare learners for academic success, transfer pathways, and workforce readiness. The ideal candidate demonstrates a strong commitment to student-centered teaching and improving success outcomes in developmental and general education mathematics.
Essential Functions
The employee is responsible for the following:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach a full-time course load in mathematics, including developmental math, college algebra, statistics, quantitative reasoning, and other general education math courses.
- Deliver instruction in various modalities (face-to-face, online, hybrid, and correctional education).
- Utilize evidence-based, student-centered teaching practices that support retention and success in mathematics courses.
- Implement strategies aligned with developmental math reform, including co-requisite models and pathways approaches where applicable.
- Develop and revise course materials to align with learning outcomes and best practices in mathematics education.
- Support the development and continuous improvement of the mathematics curriculum.
- Maintain regular office hours for student support, tutoring, and advising.
- Participate in College committees, assessment activities, and shared governance.
- Foster an inclusive learning environment that supports students with varying levels of math preparedness.
- Maintain professional currency in mathematics content and pedagogy.
- Participate in College events, recruitment activities, and outreach.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean or Vice President of Academic Affairs.
Reporting Line
Reports directly to the Vice President of Academic Affairs. Provides recommendations on curriculum development, academic assessment, and programmatic needs to the Dean of Instruction and Vice President of Academics, as appropriate.
Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Mathematics OR a Master’s Degree in any field with a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in Mathematics.
Qualifying academic disciplines may include:
- Mathematics
- Applied Mathematics
- Statistics
- Mathematics Education (with sufficient graduate mathematics coursework)
Experience:
- Teaching experience at the community college or equivalent level preferred.
- Experience teaching developmental and/or college-level mathematics strongly preferred.
- Experience with online or hybrid instruction preferred.
- Demonstrated success supporting diverse, underprepared, and non-traditional student populations.
- Experience with developmental math reform (e.g., co-requisite models, math pathways, or active learning strategies) preferred.
Duties
Perform all essential duties as listed above.
Expected to actively participate in and support student events that honor and recognize student success.
Assist in off campus academic affairs support as needed.
Assist in off campus community outreach and support as needed.
Assist in off campus promotion and recruitment activities as needed.
Attend and participate in all faculty and staff meetings.
Attend and participate in all employee meetings as required.
Other duties as assigned
Travel is required
Must possess strong interpersonal skills.
Language skills:
Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills a must. Ability to read and comprehend complex instructions, correspondence, and memos. Ability to write correspondence. Ability to effectively present information to individuals and groups from within Mesalands Community College and out in the community. Bilingual (English/Spanish) speaking ability preferred but not required.
Mathematical skills:
Ability to perform mathematical functions.
Reasoning ability:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to organize and prioritize work and meet deadlines.
Technology skills:
Computer Competency: Capable of applying and maneuvering within various software packages including but not limited to Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, and Internet.
Physical Requirements
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
The employee is required to walk, stand, sit; use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, and controls; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, and lift; and talk and hear.
The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
The noise level in the work environment is usually low. Job performed indoors. Travel is required.
