Assistant Professor in Biosensing at McGill: Canada Impact+ Faculty Search

What the Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders Program Means for Applicants

McGill just opened a tenure-track assistant professor search in biosensing, and the program name attached to it is doing more work than the rest of the posting combined. Most applicants will skim the title, miss what Canada Impact+ signals, and send a cover letter that could have gone to any biomedical engineering department in the country. Don't be that candidate.

The opening is in McGill's Department of Biomedical Engineering in Montreal. The formal title is Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track) in Biosensing, posted through the Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders Program. The department lists the role under reference RL#L001829, and the McGill Workday system carries the requisition number JR0000081518. The full posting lives on the university's Workday careers portal.

What the Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders Program Means for Applicants

A named early-career hiring stream changes how you should read the ad. The Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders Program is not a standard departmental line. It tells you the appointment carries targeted support and a specific institutional bet: McGill wants someone who can build a sensing research program, not simply backfill a teaching slot.

In Canadian universities, a tenure-track appointment means the institution is hiring with a longer review in mind. You serve a probationary period, go through a formal assessment, and then receive a continuing appointment if you meet the bar. That structure is good for research programs that need years to produce reliable sensors and clinical data. It also means the committee is not looking for a one-year stopgap.

What Biosensing Actually Covers in This Search

Biosensing is the engineering of devices that detect biological markers and turn them into usable signals. A glucose monitor is the simple example. The field runs through point-of-care diagnostics, wearable physiological monitors, implantable optical and electrochemical sensors, and lab-on-a-chip systems. The target is rarely the sensor alone; it is the translation from a messy sample to a decision a clinician or patient can act on.

For this appointment, the work sits inside biomedical engineering rather than pure chemistry or physics. A candidate who can build a device, validate it in a realistic biofluid, connect the result to a clinical question, and explain what would need to happen next for a real diagnostic will hold the committee's attention longer than someone who has only modelled a response in silico.

What the Posting Asks You to Show

McGill, like other Canadian universities, expects a PhD in engineering, physics, chemistry, or a closely related field for a tenure-track biomedical engineering search. Competitive candidates usually bring postdoctoral research output, a teaching record, and a clear statement of how their research and mentoring approach will support equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Read the posting carefully for four details most people skip: whether the department expects the hire to work with specific clinical sites, whether the program includes start-up support beyond a standard faculty package, what the first performance review will weigh most heavily, and what the teaching load looks like in the first two years. If the ad does not say, ask before you submit. A precise question asked early reads better than a long cover letter guessing.

The detailed listing is available through the McGill Workday system, and you can also find the same role summarised on AcademicJobs.com.

How to Make Your Application Less Generic

Do the unglamorous thing first: sit with the department page until you can name one collaborator, one core facility, or one research theme that connects to your work. Then write your research statement around that connection. Nobody on the committee wants a general answer about why you love sensing.

  • Start with the lab, not your biography. Name the sensor modality you would lead with, the disease or condition it addresses, the first experimental milestone you would hit, and the early data point that would prove the approach works.
  • Connect the research plan to Canadian funding. Show that you know which agency, NSERC or CIHR or both, fits the work, and name a program your first grant could target.
  • Mention something only a prepared candidate would know about McGill: a hospital partner, a research institute, or a named chair adjacent to your field.
  • Write the teaching statement with a course or lab in the department's curriculum in mind, not a generic paragraph about student engagement.

The CV matters before any of that gets read. If your CV is long, unfocused, or buried under committee service, follow the advice in our guide to writing a winning academic CV before you submit.

Why This Search Says Something About Canadian Biomedical Hiring

Biosensing sits at an awkward point in academic hiring: it requires engineering rigour and clinical translation at the same time. Canadian research agencies have pushed toward health technologies that can move out of the lab, and universities have responded with early-career streams such as Impact+ that signal applied outcomes. For candidates, the strongest applications do not just describe a sensor; they describe what happens after the sensor works.

You can check NSERC and CIHR to see which funding streams align with your planned work. The Department of Biomedical Engineering site gives you the names, centres, and research themes to mention in your materials.

What to Do This Week

Do not spend the next month polishing a generic application. Take the job title, the program name, and the department page, then write one paragraph that explains what you would build at McGill and whom you would need to collaborate with. If that paragraph is not sharp, the rest of the file will not save it.

Set a calendar reminder for the posting deadline, pull the required documents into a single folder, and send your first draft to one person who has served on a biomedical engineering search committee. Then revise. The window for this role will close, and the candidates who move fastest are usually the ones who treated the posting as a specific problem, not a bulk application.
