Position Summary: Under regular supervision, the Medical Assistant (MA) supports the medical practitioners through standard medical assistant duties as well as administrative and clerical duties, in support of Student Health and Wellbeing Services operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Patient Direction - 40%: Assist in coordination of patient flow; Check-in and escort patients to appropriate clinical areas; Instruct patient regarding correct preparation for examinations or treatments; Collect, record, and monitor patient data such as weight, height, vital signs; Assist clinicians in delivery of health services such as exams, procedures and treatments; Act as a chaperone for patient safety and comfort when needed.
- Perform Medical Procedures - 30%: With appropriate training and certification may administer injections and perform procedures such as electrocardiogram, spirometry, peak flow, ear lavage; Collect or assist patients in collecting lab specimens like STI, urine, throat or nasal swabs, assist RN or provider in wound care, PPD placement and assists in management of severely ill patients, able to perform CPR.
- Stocking - 10%: Ensure clinic areas are stocked, organized, cleaned and disinfected as necessary; Order supplies as needed; Prepare examination and treatment rooms, set up treatment trays, sterilize instruments and equipment needed; Monitors and coordinates servicing for medical equipment.
- Scheduling - 10%: Schedule appointments as needed; Process documents as needed (faxes, scans).
- Other Duties as Assigned - 5%.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Working knowledge of daily clinic operations; aseptic techniques and requirements; uses, application, and proper operation of various medical supplies and equipment; California laws and regulations pertaining to medical assistants; General knowledge of anatomy and physiology; understand the potential hazards or complications resulting from administering medications and how to initiate emergency procedures. Ability to demonstrate the proper techniques in administering medications; proper techniques in performing injections and phlebotomy; competency in performing assigned medical technical support services; maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff; and be sensitive to and communicate effectively with diverse patients.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent or combination of education and experience; Completion of specific types and hours of training as required by the Medical Board of California; Most common, certificate of completion from an accredited medical assisting program; Or, at the discretion of the student health center director, an in-house training program; Basic CPR certification.
