Job Details
Responsibilities and Duties
- Assist medical providers with patient appointments: take vital signs, document patient history, perform EKGs, administer medications and immunizations, assist with minor procedures, and respond to provider requests.
- Perform laboratory services: venipuncture, in-house CLIA-waived tests (e.g., COVID, strep, flu, HIV, mono, pregnancy, urinalysis), and lab specimen processing; maintain lab inventory and perform quality control.
- Maintain exam room and clinical equipment hygiene: clean, stock, sterilize instruments, and monitor medical supply inventory.
- Serve front desk as needed: answer phones, schedule appointments, check-in/outpatients, register and verify insurance, assist with billing, forms, and clerical tasks; review and respond to answering service messages.
- Educate students and families on immunization compliance, HIPAA, FERPA, and Health Center services; verify student compliance with immunization and TB screening requirements.
- Perform other duties assigned by Clinic Coordinator including inventory of dispensary medications, supplies, and emergency medications; prior authorization and referral support; office organization.
Qualifications and Skills
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED and successful completion of an accredited program for Medical Assistants.
- Experience with electronic health records software (e.g Point and Click), Microsoft Office, Trizetto, Cyracom, and scheduling/billing software.
- Demonstrated expertise in healthcare administrative operations including clinical skills, vital signs, EKGs, immunization administration, in-office lab testing, aseptic techniques, medical terminology.
- Proven ability to manage administrative functions in customer service, patient registration, insurance verification, use of multi-line phones and billing basics.
- Working knowledge of HIPAA and FERPA compliance standards
- Strong communication skills and ability to remain calm under pressure, including dealing with distressed patients or parents.
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced clinical environment.
General knowledge of the principles of aseptic techniques and infection control including blood and body fluid precautions. General knowledge, skill and ability to administer medications, assist with treatments, and operate medical equipment. General knowledge of and ability to meet the requirements for compliance with confidentiality of records and communications regarding clients. Skill and ability to use aseptic and sterile techniques; to interact with the public, health care providers, agencies, and facilities. Ability to perform extensive standing and walking; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to operate standard office equipment.
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in an ambulatory, urgent care, or outpatient setting.
- Experience performing CLIA-waived lab tests and medical equipment sterilization.
- Bilingual or ASL Fluency
- Familiarity with student health services and college-age population.
