Position Description
Employees in this classification provide support in an assigned research laboratory conducting specified phases of research projects. Performs work independently and is responsible for developing new procedures and techniques to be utilized in the laboratory and in experiments, and new applications for standard procedures and techniques. Work is performed under usual laboratory conditions. Some hazards may be present due to use of radioactive, carcinogenic or other potentially harmful substances. Responsibilities also include ensuring overall cleanliness of the laboratory and laboratory equipment, and ordering and maintaining an adequate stock of necessary supplies. May instruct or direct work of subordinate laboratory personnel.
Major/Essential Functions
- Testing the central hypothesis that Ubiquitin C-terminal Hydrolase L1 (UCHL1) is a driver of vascular and neurobehavioral function through mechanisms of glycosaminoglycan sulfation and accumulation associated with repetitive mild traumatic brain injury. (funded NIH K22 aims).
- Oversight and coordination of the UCHL1 mouse colony; coordination of breeding, genotyping, specimen labeling, and keeping other lab members abreast of mouse availability and helping to plan experiments.
- Serving as a user for liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, cryostat and confocal microscopy equipment.
- Laboratory administration (Following standard operating procedures, lab safety, protocol creation/maintenance, orderliness and reporting); provide logistical support for graduate student scientists and other lab personnel.
- Manage the animal colony maintaining appropriate procedures and protocols.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in one of the sciences or equivalent combination (4 years) of job-related experience and college education; experience may be substituted for college education on a year for year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior working knowledge of mouse husbandry.
- Experience working with confocal imaging, mass spectrometry, glycomics, molecular biology, histopathology, pharmacokinetics and/or blood-brain barrier physiology.
- Prior experience working in a lab-based team environment.
