Scope of Job: The Medical Scribe will work directly alongside physicians and other healthcare providers to document patient encounters and medical information in real-time. This role is vital to ensuring accurate, timely, and thorough documentation of patient care, which supports both the clinical team and patient outcomes.

Description of Duties:

• Accurately documents patient histories, physical examinations, procedures, lab results, diagnoses, and treatment plans as dictated by the healthcare provider during patient visits in real-time.
• Ensures that all patient information is recorded and updated in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system in compliance with legal, ethical, and organizational standards.
• Assists with gathering patient information, including reviewing medical histories and confirming information in patient records as needed.
• Assists the healthcare team by entering orders, prescriptions, and other necessary documentation into the system.
• Works closely with physicians and other healthcare staff to ensure seamless patient care and efficient workflows.
• Adheres to HIPAA regulations and maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
• Reviews patient records to ensure accurate documentation and identify any discrepancies or issues that may need to be corrected.
• Plans, prepares, coordinates, and implements faxing, scanning, and phone communications related to patient care.
• The position is a clerical role and does not involve direct patient care.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received: General supervision from assigned supervisor.

Supervision Given: Direct supervision of assigned staff.

Required Education: Associate’s degree from an accredited university.

Preferred Education: None

Licenses/Certifications: None.

Required Experience: One (1) year of directly related work experience, such as a transcriptionist or medical scribe.

Preferred Experience: Experience as a medical scribe.

Equipment: Use of standard office equipment.

Working Conditions: Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. Some travel and weekend work is required. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

Other: Exceptional planning and organizational skills. Familiarity with medical terminology and healthcare practices. Strong typing and data entry skills in a fast paced environment. Proficient in Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Attention to detail and ability to multitask effectively in a fast-paced environment. Ability to work well under pressure and maintain a professional demeanor.
