Job Description

Position Summary:

The MEP Manager (Mechanical, Engineering, and Plumbing) is responsible for the full maintenance and operation of all mechanical heating, ventilating, air conditioning, sprinkler, storm and sanitary systems. Under the supervision of the Director, Energy Management and Sustainability, this position will manage a designated group of Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) trades personnel. Responsibilities include coordinating preventative maintenance schedules, addressing work order requests, and leading emergency response efforts related to mechanical and plumbing systems across academic, residential, administrative, and recreational campus facilities.

This role demands a proactive, solutions-oriented leader who is well-versed in campus infrastructure and capable of balancing hands-on technical work with supervisory duties. The supervisor must foster strong communication and collaboration with other facilities staff, custodial teams, contractors, campus safety, and administrative stakeholders to ensure that all building systems support a safe, comfortable, and sustainable learning and working environment for students, faculty, and staff.

Essential Functions:

  • Develops methods and techniques for the proper maintenance of all mechanical systems.
  • Directs the steam fitting, plumbing, air conditioning and ventilating, and electrical trade staffs in their respective areas of work, allotting and assigning work, managing programs, projects, and daily work assignments.
  • Provides diagnostic analysis in the events of failure or damage and assigns the methods of repair to be employed.
  • Initiate purchase requests, work requests, and assist in the negotiating of contracts.
  • Develop, manage, control, and improve preventative maintenance programs.
  • Be available for "off-hours" problems due to system failures and/or campus emergencies (i.e. flooding, severe weather, etc.).
  • Keep accurate records of the performance of all equipment maintaining the operation to the standards acceptable by the Pollution Control Board, Insurance Agency, Dept. of Safety, and all regulatory requirements.
  • Make recommendations for energy management and control systems, conservation methods cogeneration, and facility modifications.
  • Fiscal and budgetary management: energy, overtime, service contracts, utilities, supplies, etc.
  • Supervisory responsibility for portion of HVAC / Plumbing and Electrical Maintenance Shop, to be determined with Director.
  • Establish performance measurements of in-house staff and contracted labor.

Minimal Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree in mechanical / engineering; License in Mechanical Trade in lieu of degree.
  • 7+ years of experience in HVAC, plumbing, or electrical related work.
  • Thorough knowledge of building mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, controls, and the necessary maintenance and repair.
  • Experience with Building Automation Systems.
  • Ability to work with others to achieve desired results by contributing to team projects, exchanging ideas and opinions, resolving conflicts, and developing positive working relationships.
  • Strong organizational, time-management, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience managing, supervising, training, and discipline of union labor staff.
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • License preferred.
  • Experience working with JCI / ENE BAS systems.

Position Details:

This position is a full time, benefits eligible position, with a 37.5-hour on-site work schedule. This is an administrative non-represented position.
