MEP Part Time Academic Advisor
MEP PART TIME ACADEMIC ADVISOR
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Provides admissions and academic counseling and advising to students seeking admission into VU delivered accredited and non-credit programs. Attends to administrative duties in support of operations and the California MEP State Director.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
VU Admissions / Advising Accredited
- Meet with potential new students for admissions advising, placement testing, FAFSA, and collection of admissions documents. Assist in onboarding students, providing them with a working knowledge of VUX, Blackboard, Financial Services, Student Services, Degree Works, etc.
- Meet each term with students enrolled in VU Associate’s and Bachelor’s degree programs for advising and registration; apply accurate knowledge of VU courses, degree programs & academic standards; teach students how to follow a degree plan and provide strategies to help each student toward degree completion.
- Coach and encourage learners through disruptive life events and discussion options to support student success.
- Open classrooms for faculty as required
Other Duties
- Recruiting (in-state); Education Fairs/Job Fairs/Military events
- Conduct presentations as required on behalf of the University to stakeholders such as community groups, funding sources, military audiences, site partners, VU administrators and other key decision makers.
- Travel as required in support of MEP California operations
- Stand in for MEP California State Director when required.
Required Skills & Abilities
- Excellent written/spoken communication skills
- Ability to interpret, apply, and abide by the Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and parental confidentiality issues.
- Preferred experience as a workforce coordinator, advisor, or counselor; preferred experience working with military, non-traditional, and/or at-risk students
- Must be a quick learner with willingness to adapt to new tasks and job responsibilities; friendly and outgoing with a respectful attitude
- Must have the ability to work independently while effectively managing multiple priorities and deadlines; must be organized
- Preferred experience working in collaborative, team-oriented environments and in positions that require individualized work with minimal supervision; ability to work with attention to detail
- Must be able to provide evidences of ethical and professional behavior
- Must be able to ensure availability to students and participate in occasional evening and weekend events.
- Use critical thinking skills to problem-solve and identify opportunities to excel.
MINIMAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Associate’s degree; be able to pass a background check for military base access
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- Experience working with military and civilian personnel.
- Experience in busy office environment, multitasking.
- Ability to communicate effectively with supervisor.
- Ability to work effectively in a service environment that is subject to frequent interruptions.
- Ability to maintain orderly work environment, overall excellent organizational skills.
- Experience working with diverse clientele
- Ability to learn and proficiently apply a variety of computer applications specific to the work environment.
- Quick learner, ability to mentally organize, create solutions “on the spot” as well as long-term.
- Understanding of academic degree requirements and a knowledge of requirements for degree completion.
- Proficient in Windows, Internet applications, Microsoft Office (WORD, Excel, PDF), Banner
