Who We Are

Founded in 2021, Alice L. Walton School of Medicine (AWSOM) is a nonprofit, four-year MD program that will enhance traditional medical education with the arts, humanities, and whole health principles. The school's culture embraces self-care to empower students to care for their own well-being as well as their patients'. The school's state-of-the-art medical education facility is located in Bentonville, Arkansas on the Crystal Bridges campus, home to Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and Heartland Whole Health Institute. The school has been granted preliminary accreditation status by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.

About The Position

AWSOM is seeking applicants for full-time, non-tenure foundational sciences educators in the discipline of microbiology/immunology. The faculty position is open at the Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor levels, and assigned rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. These individuals will work as part of an interdisciplinary team to ensure allopathic medial students receive broad-based training experience. Foundational sciences are interwoven throughout all four years of the curriculum. The ideal candidate will have a history of teaching excellence in medical education and work well with colleagues across the respective phases and disciplines of medical education. This position will collaborate with other clinical and foundational science faculty for the development of clinical cases or learning activities to emphasize foundational science foundational concepts and will participate in the development and review of formative and summative assessment items. The ideal candidate should have experience in multiple disciplines with clinical relevance including:

  • Microbiology
  • Immunology

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop Curriculum. Oversee the development and integration of all content tied to Microbiology/ Immunology, including the development of clinically relevant narratives and various assessment tools including, but not limited to, NBME-style multiple-choice questions and assessment of student performance in active learning sessions.
  • Teach/Instruct/Facilitate. Actively engage in student instruction, developing and delivering content using active learning methodologies. Collaborate with faculty colleagues to create and deliver pre-session and in-session flipped classroom content. Facilitate small and large group active learning; serve as facilitator for small group discussion such as in case-based learning (CBL), and other small group sessions.
  • Assessments/Evaluations. Create learning objectives related to respective foundational sciences and map them to the curriculum. Use appropriate metrics and assessment methods to ensure that students meet those objectives. Work collaboratively with faculty and staff for continuous quality improvement of courses, sessions, activities, and assessments.
  • Serve. Participate actively in leadership and group membership within the medical school (e.g., Curriculum Committee, Admissions Committee, etc.).
  • Grow Professionally. Participate in professional development programs to enhance teaching, educational and other skills needed to execute their responsibilities.
  • Other. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Doctoral degree (MD, DO, PhD, MD/PhD, or equivalent) with specific training/experience in microbiology/Immunology or a closely related field, required.
  • Experience delivering microbiology/immunology content in higher education, required.
  • Evidence of teaching excellence in higher education, required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in an LCME or COCA accredited undergraduate medical education or post graduate level education programs with concentration in microbiology/immunology or closely related field, preferred.
  • Experience in curricular development, review, or implementation in higher education, preferred.
  • Participation in inter-disciplinary team endeavors, preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in medical education, including curriculum development, formulating and editing assessment tools, and delivery in the field of microbiology/immunology, preferred.
  • Experience designing, delivering, and evaluating an integrated foundational science course, preferred.
  • Comfort with an array of educational technologies and active learning methodologies (e.g. CBL, PBL, TBL, etc.), preferred.
  • Understanding of different assessment methods, preferred.

Physical Demands:

In the work environment described, position requires sitting at a desk and utilizing a computer and a telephone for prolonged periods of time and good eye/hand coordination, bending and stretching, and physical stamina to lift and transport a minimum of 10 pounds. Visual acuity to review written materials is required for this job.

Work Environment:

Work is performed full-time (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.) in a professional, climate-controlled office environment with standard office equipment, including computers, printers, and telephones. This role requires working in an open setting near colleagues. The noise level is typically low to moderate. The role also requires interaction with both the public and internal team members in a professional and courteous manner. Some local travel will be required, and a flexible schedule may be necessary to accommodate business needs, including occasional evening and weekend work hours.
