Offer Description
The recovery and utilization of industrial waste heat represent an important opportunity to improve industrial energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In Quebec (Canada), it is estimated that approximately 200 PJ of heat is rejected annually by the industrial sector. A portion of this energy could be recovered, converted, or otherwise utilized. However, identifying the most appropriate recovery strategies remains a complex challenge. The diversity of industrial processes, the varying characteristics of heat sources, and the potential interactions among different energy recovery technologies must be considered alongside economic, geographical, and continuous-operation constraints.
There are two PhD opportunities for this project. One aims at developing a methodology for a rigorous, simplified, and reusable representation of various energy processes and waste heat recovery technologies, facilitating their integration into multi-energy system models. The other aims at developing a territorial energy analysis methodology to characterize energy flows, identify and quantify synergies among industrial stakeholders, and assess the robustness of different waste heat recovery configurations. The Port of Quebec City will serve as a case study to assess its potential development as an industrial energy hub.
