The Mountain Landscape Projects Supervisor is responsible for all the cultivation and care of the landscaping and grounds of Liberty University. Under general direction the Landscape Supervisor organizes, monitors, and supervises the landscape maintenance crews. Any other duties as assigned. Working independently and exercising good judgment and discretion.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  1. As essential personnel: you are expected to be available in the event of school closings, delays, shutdowns, and any emergencies including clean up required because of severe weather incidents. Performs snow removal activities as assigned. Such as shoveling, salting, etc. Facilities Management Division employees are essential to the overall success of Liberty University and its day-to-day functions, especially during ongoing campus events such as Winter Fest, Orientation, Convocation, Commencement, CFAW, and summer camps amongst other planned and unplanned events throughout the year. Must be available to work scheduled and unscheduled hours as emergency needs arise.
  2. Reports to work at the required time and performs duties as assigned by the Maintenance Manager or Sr. VP of Facilities Management.
  3. Responsible for wearing the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while performing the job duties and responsibilities of an Landscape Projects Supervisor and while operating related equipment including but not limited to; protective eye wear, ear protection, hard hat, gloves, steel-toed shoe, respirators/ masks, reflective safety vests, and sunscreen.
  4. Responsible for wearing a harness with a lanyard and other PPE if operating aerial lifts to perform & complete assigned jobs.
  5. Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, review, and participate in the work of staff responsible for landscape maintenance operations.
  6. Establish schedules and methods for landscaping maintenance services and upkeep of the grounds throughout the year; identify resource needs; review needs with appropriate management staff; allocate resources accordingly.
  7. Participate in the development of goals and objectives.
  8. Participate in the selection of maintenance staff; provide or coordinate staff training; work with Employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline procedures.
  9. Participate in the preparation and administration of the division budget; submit budget recommendations; monitor expenditures.
  10. Monitor and control supplies and equipment; order supplies and tools as necessary; prepare documents for equipment procurement.
  11. Answer questions and provide information to the public; investigate complaints and recommend a corrective action as necessary to resolve complaints.
  12. Perform the most technical and complex tasks of the work unit.
  13. Maintain Records concerning operations and programs; prepare reports on operations and activities.
  14. Coordinate with contractors in providing contract services; solicit and collect bids for new equipment and contracted maintenance work.
  15. Performs snow removal activities as assigned, such as shoveling, salting, etc.
  16. Responsible for proper and safe use and maintenance of all equipment, tools, and chemicals related to the Landscaping/ Grounds team.
  17. Reviews short - and long-term work plans for grounds projects on a regular basis and develops work plans for grounds maintenance.
  18. Track and record all job expenses, including but not exclusively materials and hours worked.
  19. Perform related duties as required.
  20. All other duties as assigned.
  21. Remains abreast of existing and emerging technologies, processes, products, services, and leading industry performance benchmarks.
  22. Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s mission.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position is responsible for 3-15 staff. Supervisor is responsible for coordinating and leadership of crews.

Qualifications, Credentials, and Competencies

3-5 years of professional grounds keeping experience and high school diploma or GED is required. Must have or be able to obtain a chemical spray certification. Commercial driver's license and pressure washing, lawn care, landscape and/or hardscape experience is preferred. Must have basic knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions. Ability to work on weekends, holidays, and flexible daily/evening hours.

Effective communication both verbally and in writing. Ability to intuitively reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment in order to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature. Strong organizational and computer skills. Regularly required to lift 50 pounds. Must have proof of a valid Virginia driver's license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required as periodic driving of university vehicles may be required for travel in the performance of the essential functions of this position.
