Job Summary/Basic Function
About the position:
This position oversees the daily operation of the Millersville
University Moving Department. This includes supervising a team of
3-5 student employees, as you work together to complete moving
related work orders. These work orders vary greatly, and can
include anything from delivering a few folding tables to moving an
entire office. Various material-handling equipment is employed in
this work, as well as a 5-ton box truck and forklifts. There is
considerable lifting and carrying. There is also considerable
personal contact with all departments on campus. Meetings with
campus staff to plan moves is required. It may be required that
this employee assist other university departments during special
events. Occasional off-campus trips may be required. Assisting the
Storeroom supervisor may be required. Supervision of student
workers is required as well. Basic computer skills are necessary to
communicate via email, manage departmental work orders, and
complete other basic functions.
The Mover must have certain knowledge, skills and abilities. Some
are stated as follows: 1. Knowledge of traffic laws and safety
rules pertaining to the safe operation of equipment. 2. Ability to
use ordinary maintenance tools and equipment. 3. Sufficient
strength to lift and move heavy objects and the ability to work
outdoors under adverse weather conditions.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plan and coordinate moving schedules and logistics
- Hire student employees according to university procedures.
- Train students on moving procedures and safety protocols
- Develop employee work schedules. These schedules must consider
student employee class schedules and change frequently due to
semester changes and breaks.
Complete student payroll.
Maintain inventory of moving supplies and equipment
Communicate effectively with clients about their moving
needs
Evaluate crew performance and provide feedback
Ensure proper handling of fragile and valuable items.
Oversee the shredding of confidential documents
Coordinate with third party services such as contracted outside
moving companies.
Assign and monitor the work of student employees.
Manage progress of departmental work orders through
computer
Provide equipment for set-up/tear-down of graduations, art
shows, concerts, special guest speakers, Career Days, Parents' Day,
alumni/student activities, President's functions, some athletic
events and other special events.
- Various types of equipment to be used during special events
include risers, staging, folding tables and chairs, lecterns, ADA
lifts, and various other unusual furniture and equipment.
Conducts informal meetings with campus staff and faculty
concerning removal and/or storage of materials and/or equipment. At
times, minor assembly/disassembly of simple equipment may be
required.
Discuss and make arrangements with faculty members who have
special requests concerning items being donated to the University
from outside sources. Including details of the move, addressing any
special equipment that may be required to facilitate the transfer
of items to the University.
As part of the Moving Crew, occasionally goes off-campus due to
special requirements. Some examples of reasons for going off-campus
are picking up donations, retrieving supplies and visiting the Ware
Center in Lancaster city.
Transport boxes of files to be archived from university
departments to the campus storage area.
Maintains a storage area in the Trolley Barn. Furniture and
other large items are stored at that location. Occasionally the
individual assigned to this position is requested to provide input
into the manner of disposal, or sale of these items. Also, input is
provided regarding items that have been stored for an extended
period.
Operate a 5-ton box truck to move equipment and materials to
various locations both on and off campus. Perform various routine
maintenance duties on the truck, such as checking oil, anti-freeze,
battery and gas.
Operate a fork-lift within the Palmer Receiving Department as
well as throughout the campus to move heavy equipment and bulk
materials. He/she is also responsible for moving skidded materials,
construction materials and equipment throughout campus.
Distribute items received throughout campus.
The person in this position is responsible for moving and
tracking in excess of 100 folding tables, which are property of the
Moving Department, and are distributed on campus for functions and
events. These tables are stored in an enclosed cargo trailer which
sometimes requires transportation.
All other duties as assigned.
SAFETY:
- In the performance of the duties, the employee must be
knowledgeable and experienced with safe operation of equipment and
tools (hand and power).
- Immediately reports accidents and incidents to include near
misses.
- Work safely by using Personal Protective Equipment, maintaining
equipment, following safety procedures and policies, etc.
- Complete safety training within first two weeks of start date
and monthly thereafter.
- Seek additional training and certification to perform their
duties.
- Identify safety issues related to equipment, tools, actions, or
processes.
- Review MSDS for chemicals related to the department.
- Be aware of and report potential safety hazards
immediately.
- Resolve pending hazards in a timely fashion.
- Consult with supervisor or Environmental Health & Safety
staff as needed to resolve unsafe conditions or obtain additional
training/resources.
- Stop unsafe practice regardless of shop or contractor if
imminently endangering life or severe property damage.
- Perform daily pre-operation checks on equipment.
- Follows the employee handbook and all departmental
guidelines.
- Leave work area clean and orderly at the end of shift and/or
job.
Required Qualifications
- Six months experience in the operation and maintenance of
medium to heavy equipment OR any equivalent combination of
experience and training. .
- Ability to lead a team of diverse student employees.
- Ability to operate motorized vehicles and equipment, including
a 5-ton box truck and forklifts.
- Basic knowledge of recycling practices and methods.
- Ability to maintain and make ordinary repairs to equipment, and
tools.
- Knowledge of common occupational hazards and safety precautions
of the trade.
- Ability to lift heavy items and perform strenuous manual
labor.
- Basic PC skills.
- Commitment to inclusive practices and working with diverse
student populations.
- Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication
skills.
- Demonstrated strong analytical and excellent problem-solving
skills.
- Ability to work independently and in coordination with
others.
- Valid driver's license.
- Successful interview

Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in a supervisory role within the moving
industry.
- Possess forklift certification
- Experience pulling a cargo trailer.
- Experience working in a campus environment

positions in the performance of assigned tasks.
- Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment, when
necessary, hard hats, respirators, eye protection, hearing
protection, etc.
- Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard,
mouse, hand and power tools.
- Ability to stand for long lengths of time.
- Must be able to work outside for up to 8 hours a day.
