Offer Description
The i3WaterS (Intelligent, Integrated and Innovative Water Systems) Doctoral Network, funded by the European Union under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Networks programme, is recruiting 15 Doctoral Candidates (DCs) across leading European universities and water utilities.
The project aims to advance the digital transformation of water distribution systems through the integration of Artificial Intelligence, data science, digital twins, semantic technologies, predictive analytics, hydraulic modelling, decision support systems, and smart sensing technologies.
The recruited Doctoral Candidates will work on complementary research topics covering the entire water management cycle, including:
- Smart monitoring and sensing of water distribution systems.
- Data-driven and physics-informed modelling of water networks.
- Predictive maintenance and asset management.
- Leak detection and anomaly identification.
- Water demand forecasting and operational optimization.
- Digital twins and simulation environments.
- Explainable Artificial Intelligence for water management.
- Semantic interoperability and knowledge representation.
- Intelligent decision support systems for daily operation and extreme event management.
- Resilience, sustainability, and climate adaptation of urban water systems.
- Human-AI collaboration and trustworthy AI solutions for critical infrastructures.
Each Doctoral Candidate will be enrolled in a PhD programme at one of the i3WaterS Consortium universities and will benefit from an interdisciplinary training programme combining research, innovation, industrial placements, international mobility, transferable skills, and entrepreneurship.

The consortium brings together universities, research centers, water utilities, and technology organizations from across Europe, providing a unique environment for developing the next generation of researchers and innovators in intelligent water systems.
Successful candidates will be employed for up to 36 months and will participate in international secondments and joint training activities throughout the project.

Candidates must comply with all applicable eligibility requirements and regulations of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Networks programme.
Doctoral Status: Applicants must not possess a doctoral degree at the date of recruitment.
Mobility Rule: Applicants must comply with the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) mobility rule. At the date of recruitment, candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the host country for more than 12 months during the 36 months immediately preceding the recruitment date. Short stays such as holidays are not taken into account.
Employment conditions are subject to the legislation and internal regulations of the recruiting institution.
