The Centre / Research Group
The HUM-754 Research Group "Literary and Cultural Studies" at the University of Almería is an interdisciplinary team with an established research trajectory at the intersection of literary studies, education, and digital culture. Its research activity is structured around three complementary lines.
First, the group develops research in literary studies, with a focus on Spanish-American literature, literary theory and criticism, cultural studies, and translation, paying particular attention to the circulation, reception and interpretation of texts in diverse contexts. Second, it promotes a line in literary education focused on reading formation in the contemporary reading ecosystem, characterized by digitalization, hybrid formats, and evolving reading practices. Third, the group works on academic literacy in higher education, with special attention to reading and writing processes mediated by digital technologies and Artificial Intelligence.
HUM-754 is currently involved in the R&D project "Educational transformation: Exploring the impact of AI on university students' reading and writing development" (PID2023-151419OB-I00), funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and the State Research Agency (AEI). The group has developed strong expertise in these areas and actively participates in competitive research projects, maintaining collaborations with national and international partners. It provides a collaborative and internationally oriented research environment, supporting innovative and interdisciplinary research with access to real educational contexts.
The Project
This project investigates the transformation of reading and writing practices in higher education, focusing on AI and conversational systems as mediating agents in textual interpretation.
The project adopts an interdisciplinary approach that integrates perspectives from Digital Humanities, education and social sciences, conceptualising reading and writing as interpretative, cultural and socially situated practices. It brings together literary studies, literary education and academic literacy within a coherent analytical framework centred on interpretative competence.
The main objective is to examine how AI tools influence the ways in which university students read, interpret and produce texts, and how this reshapes processes such as comprehension, argumentation and knowledge construction.
Particular attention will be paid to the role of AI in mediating the relationship between readers, writers and texts, as well as to its impact on critical reading, academic writing and the reconfiguration of authorship and textual authority.
The project will also address the emergence of new forms of literacy, including AI literacy, information literacy and media literacy, as key competences in contemporary higher education.
Potential research lines include AI-assisted writing, reading practices in hybrid and digital environments, and human–AI interaction in interpretative tasks, together with their pedagogical implications.
Methodologically, the project combines qualitative and quantitative approaches, textual analysis and classroom-based research, and will be adapted to the candidate's profile.
The project aligns with European priorities on digital transformation and education, contributing to the development of innovative frameworks for AI-mediated literacy.
