Overview
The Music Education program curriculum at the University of Missouri - Kansas City consists of three main components – seminars and core courses, research, and teaching techniques and philosophies:
- Seminars and core courses provide you with the theory, teaching methods and structure that will serve as a foundation for your own teaching practice.
- The research component provides you with opportunities to conduct your own research and aid faculty in theirs.
- And finally, the teaching techniques and philosophies portion allows you to gain first-hand experience observing and teaching at the undergraduate and K-12 levels.

Applicants to the Ph.D. in Education: Music Education Emphasis must:
- Have an aggregate minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 and graduate GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
- Submit a thesis or equivalent evidence of written scholarship.
- Have an acceptable on-campus interview with doctoral faculty members from this discipline.
- Demonstrate comprehensive musicianship by providing a video link which should include a rehearsal, performance, and classroom teaching. Each video should be between 5 and 10 minutes.
- Minimum of 3 years K-12 teaching experience.
- In most cases, students entering the Ph.D. in Education with an emphasis in Music Education will have earned at least one degree in Music Education or a related field. Students with backgrounds in music therapy are also encouraged to apply.
