POSITION TYPE: Full-Time Faculty

START DATE: Summer 2026

PURPOSE OF POSITION: Teach and advise orchestral ensembles, or orchestral and wind ensembles, as well as other music courses. The university seeks qualified candidates who will teach using curricular and pedagogical best practices, who have a willingness to develop courses and curriculum related to music and instrumental practice, and who will assist in the overall program leadership and development.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Conduct orchestral ensembles or orchestral and wind ensembles in area of experience and expertise.
• Teach courses in strings or strings and wind music education and pedagogy, with other possible teaching opportunities in ear training, music theory, music literature, and/or applied lessons.
• Teach the music section of Core 163: Introduction to the Arts.
• Supervise student teachers (if qualifications permit).
• Network with instrumental directors both locally and nationally.
• Participate as a full team member in department and college administrative tasks including curriculum development and review, assessment, development of new initiatives, student recruiting and advising, and committee assignments.
• Undertake self-assessment process to establish performance standards.
• Develop and implement a personal professional development plan consistent with university and departmental goals.
• Participate in the Core Program and campus life of Dordt University.
• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Clear understanding of and personal commitment to a Reformed Biblical perspective and the mission of Dordt University, and ability to articulate that perspective well in the context of teaching Core and History courses.
• Express an active Christian commitment, which shall include affiliation with a local, confessionally Reformed congregation that actively supports the mission of Dordt University.
• Personal endorsement of The Task and Educational Framework of Dordt University, and commitment to the curricular design set forth in The Educational Framework.
• A master’s degree is required; an earned doctorate (Ph.D. or D.M.A.) or willingness to complete a doctorate is preferred.
• Excellent conducting skill and rehearsal techniques.
• Knowledge of string orchestra or string and wind ensemble techniques.
• Demonstrated excellence (or potential for excellence) in teaching, including instructional design and dynamic classroom management, and continual assessment of student learning is desired. A commitment to excellence in college-level teaching, including curriculum design, classroom management, and ongoing student learning assessment is required.
• Oral and written communication skills and interpersonal abilities that enable effective collaboration with students, faculty and staff, community members, and other professionals.
