Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

Young and research-intensive, Nanyang Technological University (NTU Singapore) is ranked among the world’s top universities. Agile, bold, and inventive, NTU Singapore shapes the future by combining technology and human creativity to tackle the toughest challenges facing society today.

The School of Humanities (SoH) at NTU Singapore is committed to disciplinary excellence and interdisciplinary innovation, with particular strengths in Digital, Health, and Environmental Humanities, and the study of Global Asia. SoH is part of the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (CoHASS), which aims to be Asia’s leading centre for innovative, interdisciplinary Humanities, Arts and Social Science research and practice.

The Position

The Department of English invites applications for an Assistant/Associate/Full Professor (Tenure-track or Tenured) in Literary Studies and Computational Methods.

We seek an intellectually ambitious scholar whose research combines computational, quantitative, or data-driven approaches with sustained engagement in literary interpretation, theory, and history. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of computational literary studies at NTU, working collaboratively within English, across the School of Humanities, and through active participation in the Asian Centre for Digital Cultures, which provides a platform for interdisciplinary research, collaborative projects, and international engagement in digital humanities.

Research Profile

Applicants should demonstrate a strong and original research agenda that advances literary scholarship through computational methods. Areas of interest may include (but are not limited to):

  • Computational or quantitative approaches to literary form, genre, narrative, or style
  • Large-scale textual or corpus-based literary analysis
  • Digital, comparative, or transnational literary history
  • Theoretical and methodological work on scale, abstraction, modelling, or interpretation
  • Intersections between literary theory, data science, machine learning, or network analysis

The department welcomes research across historical periods and literary traditions; with a focus on texts in English, but potentially including work that engages Asian, global, and/or multilingual textual corpora, and research that resonates with the intellectual priorities of the Asian Centre for Digital Cultures.

Teaching and Supervision

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in English and literary studies, including courses that introduce students to computational and digital approaches to the study of texts. The candidate will supervise postgraduate research and contribute actively to mentoring students working across literary studies, digital humanities, and interdisciplinary research contexts. They may also contribute to CoHASS’s new Digital Humanities MA degree

Requirements

Requirements at all levels include:

  • A PhD in English, Comparative Literature, Digital Humanities or a related field.
  • Evidence of strong scholarly promise and a developing publication profile
  • Demonstrated capacity to integrate computational or quantitative methods into literary research
  • Demonstrated commitment to high-quality teaching and student mentorship
  • An interest in collaborative, interdisciplinary, and internationally engaged research
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

In addition, requirements at the Associate Professor and Full Professor level include:

  • Recognition in the research community, such as invited talks, awards, or memberships in professional societies.
  • Proven ability to secure research funding.
  • Demonstrated capacity to contribute to curriculum development.
  • A strong track record of supervising students, research staff, and/or postdocs, as well as mentoring junior faculty.
  • Experience in leadership and/or service roles.

Emoluments and Environment

Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. The University offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package.

NTU offers a dynamic and well-resourced environment for humanities-led computational research. The successful candidate will join a growing community of scholars working in digital humanities and related fields, with opportunities to collaborate through the Asian Centre for Digital Cultures and across NTU’s broader ecosystem of interdisciplinary research initiatives. NTU actively supports international research networks, competitive grant funding, and innovative cross-disciplinary programmes.
