Offer Description
A public selection based on qualifications and interviews is open to award no. 1 research grant in the field of “Analysis of the Petrophysical and Geological Properties of Potential CO₂ Storage Sites in Italy” for the Geophysics Section of the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics – OGS.
The scientific and training programme aims at developing methodologies for the geological and petrophysical characterization of potential geological CO₂ storage sites in Italy, with particular emphasis on reservoir–caprock systems in the Po Plain Basin and the Gissi area. The main activity will focus on the compilation, analysis and geostatistical characterization of well data available in the public domain through the VIDEPI database, together with the associated technical documentation (well reports, stratigraphic reports, geophysical logs, petrophysical data and formation test results). A particular focus will be devoted to defining the spatial distribution of the main petrophysical properties of reservoir and caprock units, including porosity, permeability, lithology, thickness and other relevant parameters, as well as quantifying their spatial variability and geological heterogeneity. The analyses will be carried out in both the Po Plain Basin and the Gissi area, which represent the two case studies of the project. The Po Plain Basin provides an extensive database of well information and benefits from significant previous research undertaken by OGS, while the Gissi area represents an additional case study for the geological and petrophysical characterization of potential large-scale geological CO₂ storage systems in carbonate reservoir formations. The results of the geostatistical analyses will provide fundamental constraints for guiding the geological and petrophysical interpretation of seismic datasets available both in the public domain and within the OGS archives, contributing to an improved three-dimensional characterization of potential CO₂ storage systems. In particular, the integration of well and seismic data will enable the identification and quantification of the geological heterogeneity of reservoir–caprock systems, providing the key geological and petrophysical constraints required for the development of representative static geological models of potential CO₂ storage sites. The activities will be carried out in close synergy with the seismic interpretation and geological modelling tasks undertaken within the overall research programme, promoting the multidisciplinary integration of geological, geophysical and petrophysical information and the development of geological models that are consistent with all available datasets. The programme will provide the successful candidate with advanced training in the integrated analysis of geological and petrophysical data, the application of geostatistical methods, the use of geoscientific databases and specialized subsurface characterization software, leading to the development of highly qualified expertise in the field of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).
