Essential Job Duties:
This position provides comprehensive patient care and care coordination for the Nephrology and Urology service within the Randall B. Terry Jr. Companion Animal Medical Center. The service delivers specialty-level care for patients requiring advanced evaluation and treatment of urinary and renal conditions in a fast-paced, teaching-hospital environment. This role requires in-depth veterinary medical knowledge, strong organizational and communication skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with clinicians, staff, students, clients, and referring veterinarians.
Key Responsibilities:
Specialty Patient Care & Treatment Support
Provide comprehensive direct patient care across specialty services, including support for diagnostic, therapeutic, and procedural treatments. Responsibilities include patient monitoring, medication and therapy administration, post-sedation and post-procedure recovery, pain management, and ongoing patient assessment to ensure safety and comfort throughout the continuum of care.
Procedural, Diagnostic & Technical Support
Prepare and assist with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures using aseptic technique; maintain sterile environments; support sedation and anesthesia-related activities; and operate specialized equipment while coordinating diagnostic imaging and testing such as CT, MRI, ultrasound, and radiography.
Client, rDVM & Interdisciplinary Communication
Participate in client check-in, patient admitting, scheduling, and updates, and work directly with referring veterinarians, clinicians, and hospital teams to facilitate clear communication and coordinated care that supports optimal patient outcomes and client satisfaction.
Workflow, Documentation & Financial Coordination
Coordinate patient visits and services, including diagnostic, surgical, anesthetic, medication, and sample requests; accurately document patient care and communications in hospital information systems; and participate in billing, estimates, and charge entry.
Education, Compliance & Operational Support
Orient and train staff and learners; maintain equipment readiness and appropriate supply levels; uphold a clean and safe work environment; and ensure compliance with hospital policies, infectious disease protocols, OSHA, EHS, and radiation safety training requirements.
Documentation, Safety & Compliance
Accurately document patient care and treatments within hospital information systems while maintaining a clean, safe work environment and adhering to infectious disease protocols, OSHA, EHS, and radiation safety standards. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations.

Minimum Experience/Education:
Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience as a veterinary assistant in a clinical setting, preferably at a teaching hospital.
- Demonstrated ability to assist with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures using aseptic technique and to support sedation or anesthesia-related activities.
- Experience coordinating diagnostic imaging and testing (e.g., CT, MRI, ultrasound, radiography) and operating specialized veterinary medical equipment.
- Proficiency in documenting patient care, coordinating services, and managing billing, estimates, and charge entry within a hospital information system.
- Strong communication and organizational skills, with experience collaborating with clinicians, students, clients, referring veterinarians, and interdisciplinary teams while adhering to established safety and infectious disease protocols.
