Job Summary:

The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) is the state’s public and environmental health laboratory. As part of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the WSLH is committed to exploring new ideas that benefit the state, the nation, and the world. The Newborn Screening (NBS) Laboratory has an exciting full-time public health opportunity to conduct NBS follow up activities. to ensure that all newborns receive a valid screening test, and that those with positive screening results receive a definitive diagnosis, in the most expedient manner possible, and appropriate clinical management if confirmed.

  • The primary role of this position is to reach out to the Wisconsin primary care clinics and NBS relevant specialty clinics to obtain clinical confirmatory testing results and clinical assessment information on infants with a screening positive result, and inputs, maintains, and analyzes those data in confidential laboratory information management system. The duties also include outcome tracking and case management of infants undergoing repeat or further diagnostic testing. This position is expected to summarize and organize follow-up information on all screened newborns, and generate data-based annual reports. The summarized information and reports are used to monitor and evaluate the program performance, and identify the areas for improvement. This position is responsible for entering relevant data to the Newborn Screening Technical Assistance and Evaluation Program (NewSTEPs), a national newborn screening resource center designed to provide data, technical assistance, and training to NBS programs and to assist states with quality improvement initiatives hosted by the Association of Public Health Laboratories. This position is expected to provide statistic and data organization assistance on research projects, committee meetings, program evaluation. When new conditions are added to the screening panel, this position will be involved with designing, implementing, and evaluating data reporting systems.

The person in this position is expected to model and use the tools and principles of quality management in their daily work including: demonstrating exceptional professionalism by establishing and maintaining effective professional relationships with directors, laboratory manager, supervisors, coworkers, and all customers. The person must use effective team skills to contribute to a collaborative working environment. Participation in continuous learning through professional development activities is also expected. The position functions under general supervision and direction of the NBS Laboratory Director.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Provides expert statistical consulting, analysis, and technical assistance on research projects, program assessment, and evaluation - 10%
  • Generates data-based annual reports of curricular and departmental outcomes - 20%
  • Inputs, maintains, and analyzes data in confidential databases and transfers data as needed - 60%
  • Designs, implements, and evaluates data reporting systems - 10%

Department:

Disease Prevention Division - Newborn Screening

Compensation:

$60,000/year minimum (Depending on Qualifications)

Required Qualifications:

Three years life science working experience with data management components in a clinical/patient care, or public health setting

Preferred Qualifications:

Copy of official transcript or diploma and board certification will be requested prior to offer of employment.

Education:

Bachelor of Science in biology, biochemistry, or genetics.
