Novel Multi-axis MEMs Force Sensors for Robotic Applications

About the Project

Robots heavily rely on sensors to interact with their environment. Among these sensors, multi-axis force sensors play a pivotal role in enabling robots to safely interact with objects. However, a notable drawback of these sensors is their relatively large size, rendering them unsuitable for various applications, such as miniature robotics and medical robotics. To address this limitation, we are embarking on groundbreaking research to uncover innovative multi-axis force sensors based on MEMs (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) technology.

The project: The research project offers an exceptional opportunity for a dedicated PhD student to work under the guidance of two experienced supervisors, Dr Chun Zhao (MEMs sensor) and Dr. Babar Jamil (robotics). The primary aim of this research initiative is to conceptualise and develop novel designs for MEMs multi-axis force sensors, focusing on their miniaturisation and subsequent application within the realm of robotics. The main challenge in this project is to realise a miniaturised MEMs sensor while achieving the required sensing precision and accuracy for robotics applications. Address this challenge would require detailed modelling of the MEMs force sensors in question, which would then inform a novel design strategy (e.g. based on machine learning). The specific application of these sensors will be determined and communicated to the student during the project. This endeavour promises to push the boundaries of robotics by enhancing the capabilities of multi-axis force sensors in a variety of potential contexts.

The student will access the well-equipped laboratories available at the University of York, and will gain comprehensive training and experience in a wide range of tasks essential to the project: MEMs sensor design, fabrication, characterisations, as well as robotics. The student will have access to full-time training for postgraduate students, tailored to their particular degree background.

The supervisors have strong connections with both academia (e.g., University of Cambridge, KU Leuven, TU Delft, Sungkyunkwan University). The supervisors encourage collaboration and academic exchanges, and you will have a plethora of opportunities for collaboration.
