Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Instructor, Psychiatry, Child, Adolescent & Adult Outpatient (OPD)

Stony Brook University is seeking a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner to join our team. Primary responsibilities will include conducting psychiatric evaluations for individuals presenting in immediate psychiatric distress, as well as routine psychiatric evaluations. The role also involves managing short-term treatment interventions, offering school consultations, delivering professional development for school personnel, and acting as a liaison between the clinic and community, including local school districts. Additionally, this position will play a critical role in integrating education and clinical care for children, adolescents and young adults.
Key responsibilities include:
- Performing both urgent and routine psychiatric assessments, including taking comprehensive psychiatric history and conducting diagnostic evaluations.
- Administering psychopharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions, and providing recommendations for the level of care required.
- Collaborating with local school districts to provide consultation, ensuring integration of educational and clinical efforts for students.
- Engaging with families and other collaterals to obtain histories as needed to ensure accurate assessments and appropriate treatment planning.
- Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams across various locations, utilizing a variety of electronic documentation systems.
- Opportunity to teach and supervise medical students.
- Work with children and family on linkage to community resources.
- Strong communication skills, personable approach, and ability to interact with patients, families, and school personnel daily.
The Nurse Practitioner will be assigned to various school and outpatient locations in Suffolk County, some on the east end of Long Island and will be expected to perform other duties as assigned. Willingness to travel between locations with reliable transportation is required.
Schedule:
Full-time position, totaling 40 hours per week with cross-coverage responsibilities as needed. The anticipated schedule allows for approximately 80% of the time dedicated to clinical care, and 20% liaising with schools, communities and families.
The position is Monday through Friday with varying hours during the day shift. The position requires local travel between locations, some on the east end of Long Island, and some hours can be conducted remotely. Some urgent or emergent evaluations will be conducted virtually during scheduled shifts.
Required Qualifications: Master’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Nursing. Graduate of an accredited Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner program. Nurse Practitioner Certification in Psychiatry. ANCC Board Certified as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). Valid New York State license as a PMHNP, or eligibility.
Preferred Qualifications: At least 1 year of Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner clinical experience serving youth or adults, or completion of a psychiatric nurse practitioner residency program. Substance Use Disorder Experience. Experience conducting psychiatric evaluations in-person and through a virtual platform. Experience in de-escalation techniques. Teaching experience.
