Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:
The mission of the Abrons Student Health Center (SHC) is to provide student centered affordable, quality health and preventive services to the students of UNCW. The SHC provides comprehensive medical services and a retail pharmacy, all with a focus on student success and patient education. The Health Center's goal is to help students stay as healthy as possible so they can fully engage in the classroom.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position:
This position functions as a member of a clinical team in the provision of health care in a thriving college health center.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Obtaining extensive medical history
- Assessing, diagnosing, and treating acute illness and those elements of primary medical care that are reasonable within the constraints of the nature of student health and the individual's certification
- Prescribing the appropriate therapies including medication
- Providing on-going medication monitoring
- Ordering and interpreting appropriate diagnostic tests including laboratory, radiological, and EKGs
- Performing common office-based procedures
- Documenting all pertinent data in patient's electronic medical record in an accurate and timely manner
- Following up with patients and their family (as appropriate)
- Referring clients to specialist or other community resources as appropriate
- Providing a holistic approach to patient care, including provision of patient education as appropriate
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
To qualify as a Physician Assistant: Graduation and/or completion of an educational program for Physician Assistants accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs and an active Physician Assistant License issued by the North Carolina Medical Board (NCMB).
OR
To qualify as a Nurse Practitioner: Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the North Carolina Board of Nursing, completion of a Nurse Practitioner program approved by the North Carolina Joint Subcommittee of the Board of Nursing and Board of Medical Examiners, and 'approved to practice medical acts' by the Joint Subcommittee.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
- Previous work experience as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in a college/university
- Previous experience in clinic setting (including family practice, internal medicine, urgent care, or another related field)
- Previous experience performing office-based procedures and/or microscopy (i.e., wet preps)
- Previous experience working with patients 17-30 years old
Required Certifications or Licensures:
Physician Assistant Candidates: Graduation and/or completion of an educational program for Physician Assistants accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs and an active Physician Assistant License issued by the North Carolina Medical Board (NCMB).
