Harvard University Health Services (HUHS)

Harvard University Health Services (HUHS) is the on-site multi-specialty medical practice and health administration for the Harvard community, offering clinicians the chance to practice high-quality, relationship-based care in a mission-driven campus setting, caring for a defined academic population of students, faculty, staff, eligible post-docs, retirees, and their dependents. Job Description

Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager, the Nurse Practitioner at HUHS works collaboratively to provide preventive, episodic, and ongoing health care to the adolescent, adult and older adult University Community. The Nurse Practitioner works interdependently within a multidisciplinary team to provide care within their scope of practice as outlined by applicable state law, licensing, regulations, institutional policies, and practice agreements.

Job-Specific Responsibilities:

Clinical Knowledge

  • Demonstrates knowledge of etiologies, risk factors, pathophysiology, presentation and epidemiology of medical conditions relevant to area of practice.
  • Performs history and physical assessments of patients that are accurate, complete, concise, relevant and appropriate for age, gender and clinical problem.
  • Orders appropriate diagnostic studies and correctly interpret the results.
  • Utilizes critical thinking to synthesize and analyze collected data.
  • Develops implements, evaluates and alters the plan of care as needed.
  • Manages general medical and surgical conditions based on knowledge of the indications, contraindications, side effects, interactions and adverse reactions of pharmacologic agents and other relevant treatment modalities.
  • Counsels and educates patients and families.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in procedural skills pertinent to practice area.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, concise and timely documentation in the electronic medical record.

Patient Care

  • Provides care that is patient and family centered, compassionate, appropriate and effective for the promotion of health, prevention of illness and treatment of disease throughout the lifespan.
  • Facilitates consistent, coordinated care and clear communication among all members of the healthcare team.
  • Incorporates the patient and family in care planning and treatment across settings.
  • Serves as an advocate for patients and families in navigating the health care system.

Practice Based Learning and Clinical Improvement

  • Demonstrates insight into own strengths, limitations and knowledge deficits.
  • Demonstrates initiative to meet identified learning needs using multiple resources.
  • Actively participates in self-evaluation by seeking and utilizing guidance and constructive feedback in a professional manner.
  • Continuously seeks opportunities for clinical advancement and knowledge and skill attainment.
  • Refers appropriately to specialty services.

Communication and Interdisciplinary Collaboration

  • Communicates and collaborates effectively with physicians, other health professionals and health related agencies.
  • Works effectively with multidisciplinary team members.
  • Promotes mutual respect and trust working within a team model.
  • Communicates effectively with patients and families, incorporating gender, age, culture, race, religion, disabilities and sexual orientation.
  • Refers appropriately to specialty services.

  • Follows ethical principles regarding patient confidentiality, informed consent and unanticipated adverse outcomes.
  • Demonstrates the highest level of accountability for professional practice.
  • Participates in education of students and other health care professionals.

Age-Specific Competencies

Identifies age specific competencies for direct and indirect patient care for the following groups: Adolescent 13-19 years, Young Adult 20-40 years, Middle Adult 41-65 years, Older Adult over 65 years.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Registered nurse licensed in MA with authorization to practice in the expanded role in the state of Massachusetts.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience as an RN in acute and/or ambulatory care setting.
  • State and Federal DEA Certificate as required.

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Experience with emergency/urgent care and associated procedures, phlebotomy, IV insertion, previous Nurse Practitioner experience.

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license and Nurse Practitioner (NP) license in good standing.
  • Must hold, or be eligible to obtain, a Massachusetts RN license prior to start date, including through multistate licensure/compact agreement if applicable.
  • State and Federal DEA Certificate as required.

Additional Information

Standard Hours/Schedule: 24 hours per week. Monday, Thursday, and Friday. Days off on Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday. Scheduled to work every 4th weekend, during which the weekly schedule will be adjusted as needed to maintain an average of 24 hours.
