Job Summary
The Nursing & Health Sciences Summer Camp Counselors support the planning, coordination, and implementation of a healthcare-focused summer camp for high school students. Counselors help ensure a safe, engaging, and academically enriching environment that introduces participants to careers in healthcare, medical science, and public health.
Counselors serve as mentors, facilitators, and support staff, assisting with program delivery, student engagement, and daily operations while ensuring compliance with all institutional and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
- Program Support: Assist in the implementation of camp activities, schedules, and instructional sessions.
- Activity Facilitation: Support hands-on, age-appropriate healthcare science lessons, labs, simulations, and career exploration activities.
- Student Supervision: Supervise and actively engage with participants to ensure a safe and positive experience.
- Safety and Compliance: Adhere to institutional policies, FERPA and HIPAA-related boundaries, and all safety protocols, including laboratory safety standards.
- Student Engagement: Promote a positive, inclusive environment that encourages participation, teamwork, and intellectual curiosity.
- Operational Support: Assist with daily camp operations, including check-in/check-out, attendance, transitions, and material distribution.
- Environment Setup: Help prepare and break down classrooms, labs, and simulation spaces.
- Communication: Communicate effectively with camp leadership regarding student needs, concerns, or incidents.
- Mentorship: Provide guidance, encouragement, and support to students exploring healthcare careers.
- Emergency Awareness: Follow established procedures for medical or behavioral emergencies and report concerns promptly.
Required Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Background or strong interest in healthcare, nursing, science, education, or related field
- Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and fellow counselors
- CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain prior to camp)
- Successful completion of a background check
- Completion of required University System of Georgia (USG) training modules related to Minors on Campus policies
Preferred Qualifications
- Current college student or recent graduate preferred
- Experience working with youth (mentoring, tutoring, coaching, camp leadership) preferred
- Enrollment in or completion of a program in nursing, health sciences, biology, psychology, education, or related field
- Experience with student organizations, camps, or STEM-related programs
- Familiarity with basic clinical or simulation activities
- Ability to facilitate small-group discussions and hands-on learning activities
