The Registered Nursing Education Program at College of Marin prepares students for entry into the nursing profession and serves as a foundation for advanced nursing studies. The Program is guided and approved by the Board of Registered Nursing. Graduates are prepared to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses.

Candidates being considered for teaching assignments shall be required to undergo and pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug testing and background check(s), in accordance with hospital or agency policies. Each nursing faculty member shall participate in an orientation program, including but not limited to the program's curriculum, policies and procedures, strategies for teaching and students' supervision and evaluation.

Note: College of Marin's faculty pools are open to applications on a continuous basis. Although there may not be any current openings, applications will remain on file until the hiring department has a need to add candidates to their pool OR for up to one year from the date of application, whichever occurs first. If your application becomes inactive after one year, you may re-apply to the pool at that time. Screenings and interviews can be conducted at any point in time as the hiring department necessitates. Once a screening has occurred, applicants will be notified of their status.

ONLINE INSTRUCTIONAll faculty members must be available to provide instruction in the classroom (in person). Please note that the College does not offer online-only teaching assignments.

Essential Functions

Instructors appointed to the part-time temporary pool may be used to cover part-time, temporary and/or substitute openings in the department. Assignments can vary in duration and are not guaranteed. Assignments for Nursing pool instructors include:

  • Providing effective classroom, clinical or laboratory instruction using methods and materials appropriate to the subject matter
  • Preparing and grading all class assignments and examinations
  • Advising, assisting and evaluating students, evaluating learning outcomes and maintaining regular office hours
  • Participating in program activities including curriculum and program planning, development, evaluation, and decision making as well as the development of new teaching-learning methods and materials
  • Contributing to development of program policies and procedures
  • Developing clinical rotations for the hospital/community placements.
  • Meeting with staff in clinical/community agencies for orientation, and coordination of instruction.
  • Evaluating students' clinical competencies following the program's regulations and procedures.
  • Ensuring that all records are developed and maintained as required by BRN.
  • Participating in disciplinary, departmental, and college professional activities and/or committees
  • Maintaining accurate and timely student records as required
  • Maintaining currency and depth of knowledge in assigned area of responsibility
  • Maintaining appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics
  • Communicating with excellent written and verbal skills in English

Requirements & Desirables

Applicants must meet one of the following sets of requirements (A or B). Assignments within the Nursing Program will be determined based on the instructor's qualifications as they fulfill these requirements. Instructors who meet the "B List" requirements would be eligible for assignments to teach lecture/theory courses in addition to clinical nursing courses; instructors who meet only the "A List" requirements would not be eligible for lecture/theory assignments.

REQUIREMENTS - A LIST - Clinical Instruction Only

  1. A Bachelor's degree in Nursing and two (2) years of related professional experience; and
  2. One (1) year of full-time continuous experience in the last five (5) years as a Registered Nurse providing direct patient care in the area assigned to teach or one (1) academic year of RN level clinical teaching experience in the designated nursing area; and
  3. Current and valid RN license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing; and
  4. Appointment is subject to BRN approval; and
  5. Current and valid CPR/BLS certification; and
  6. Demonstrated sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and the campus community.

OR

REQUIREMENTS - B LIST - Lecture/Theory & Clinical Instruction

  1. A Master's degree in Nursing or Nursing Education; or
  2. A Bachelor's degree in Nursing AND a Master's in Health Education or Health Science; or
  3. The equivalent; and
  4. One year of full-time continuous experience in the last five (5) years as a Registered Nurse providing direct patient care in the area they are assigned to teach or one (1) academic year of RN level clinical teaching experience in the designated nursing area; and
  5. Completion of at least one year's experience teaching courses related to nursing or a course which includes practice in teaching nursing; and
  6. Current and valid RN license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing; and
  7. Current and valid CPR/BLS certification; and
  8. Appointment is subject to BRN approval; and
  9. Successful passing of post-offer, pre-employment drug & background screening; and
  10. Demonstrated sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and the campus community.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (Desirable Attributes & Skills)

  • Competencies related to: curriculum & course development; teaching & learning theory; information resources & evaluating student outcomes; and, assisting student to develop critical thinking skills
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing, with a diverse campus community
  • Currency and depth of knowledge in assigned area of responsibility and subject matter
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work effectively and professionally with colleagues and members of the campus community
  • Commitment to the teaching profession, its goals and ideals, and enthusiasm for the mission of the College of Marin
  • Understanding of contemporary equity and diversity concepts and issues in a community college setting
  • Familiarity with, willingness and ability to use multiple teaching methods including computer based learning
  • Ability and enthusiasm to use teaching methods that engage students and encourage them to be motivated self-learners
  • Knowledge, training and experience with online pedagogy and technology
  • Evidence of excellent written and oral skills in English
