Nursing Supervisor (D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion: Operating Room)
The D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion is a 12-story hospital that will house 264 private rooms capable of converting to intensive care; a state-of-the-art neurosciences center; and high-level, specialty care services for cardiovascular and thoracic patients, along with advanced imaging.
The anticipated opening of the new D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion is fall 2025.
The nursing supervisor position has a primary function to coordinate and/or manage the daily OR schedule in a large, Level 1 Trauma, multi-service OR. Coordinate Operating Room management, preparedness and cleanliness for first start cases. Provide professional nursing leadership and administrative direction for nursing practice within the Pavilion Operating Room. Participate as an active member of the leadership team focusing on daily staffing, scheduling, as well as operational needs. Coordinate and optimize patient flow across the OR/PACU of the Pavilion to promote quality, safe patient care with appropriate nursing and support staff. Serve as liaison for clinical and operational issues surrounding patient placement in partnership with Anesthesia, Surgical, and Nursing staff. Provide ongoing monitoring of the trauma call system and remain readily available to receive Level 1 and 2 trauma patients. Collaborate with ancillary services and disciplines to eliminate barriers to timely transfers and receipt of patients. Act as a liaison between the OR/PACU department and patients and families. Provide direct supervision to nursing and ancillary staff members assigned.
Personnel Management: Schedule and assign clinical staff, arrange coverage as needed. Supervise, mentor, counsel and evaluate staff as part of a continuous development program within the Professional Framework. Support staff education, cross training, and proficiency development. Develop and foster teamwork and building trusting relationships. Facilitate open channels of communication with the ACNO, directors, managers, peers, staff, and physicians. Counsel and discipline staff to enable achievement of the unit and institutional objectives, particularly as related to high quality patient care.
Clinical Operations: Coordinate unit operations including instrument processing, equipment evaluation, specialty implants, and specific surgeon requests. Coordinate and control vendor site access and activity. Participate in the development and implementation of unit goals and objectives. Manages, directly and in collaboration with others, staffing, scheduling, and benchmarking, work redesign and cost management strategies in the planning and management of clinical operations. Interprets and implements university and health system policies and procedures. Assists in the planning and implementation of new or expanded services and programs. Represents nursing and or clinical department/unit on assigned committees. Round in the OR areas to gather and report real time activity. Partner with Anesthesia to identify and problem-solve patient placement barriers to expedite Operating Room availability. Board all add-on/trauma/urgent cases. Coordinate communication hand-off to Afternoon Charge Nurse.
Quality Assurance and Research: Assists in the development of strategies to improve care management within the area or unit. Participates in and supports the involvement of nursing staff in unit quality improvement activities. Provides leadership to staff in understanding and applying quality improvement principles and adoption of evidence-based changes in practice into daily work. Promotes the integration of research findings into clinical practice. Supports research activities on the unit, as indicated. Serve as a resource regarding institutional and departmental policies and procedures. Coordinate and implement clinical nursing practice based on UMHS Policies and AORN Standards.
Professional Development Education: Facilitate collective activity in professional organizations. Develops self professionally through continuing education, professional reading, participation in professional organizations and networking. Evaluates own performance periodically with the CND/ACNO.
Required qualifications: Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in Michigan. Applicant must meet one of the following: Bachelors of Science in Nursing OR Associates degree or Diploma in Nursing and a Master's degree in Nursing. Minimum five (5) years RN experience. Minimum two (2) years of recent (within the last 5 years) RN experience in Operating Room. Nurse Leadership certification or completion of a nurse leadership certification within two (2) years of accepting this position. Evidence of demonstrated or potential leadership ability, including charge nurse, team leader or other management experience.
