PURPOSE

The Research Specialist I, II or III plays a key role in overall management of the Coastal Ecosystem Processes Lab group at the Harte Research Institute and its activities. The person filling this position will serve as the Laboratory Manager of a water quality lab and will also be responsible for analysis of water samples obtained by the research group.

DESCRIPTION

Functional Area 1:  Research

Percent Effort: Level I - 65%, Level II - 70%, Level III - 75%

  • Manages all activities in the laboratory to ensure project success and lab safety.
  • Performs analysis of nutrients, organic matter, and other water quality parameters using established benchtop chemistry methods, including operating instruments such as a Seal Quaatro segmented flow nutrient analyzer, a Shimadzu TOC-LN carbon analyzer, and a Turner Trilogy fluorometer among others. 
  • QA/QC and transfer of data from lab analyses and field sampling to Data Manager.

Functional Area 2: Training

Percent Effort: Level I - 30%, Level II – 25% Level III - 20%

  • Develop and maintain training materials for lab members.
  • Trains students and staff on laboratory research methods and field sampling techniques.

Functional Area 3: Administrative

Percent Effort: Level I - 5%, Level II - 5%, Level III - 5%

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

LEVEL I

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Four (4) years of related experience.
  • Including at least one year of experience performing analytical chemistry related to water quality or biogeochemistry.

LEVEL II

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Six (6) years of related experience.
  • Including at least one year of experience performing analytical chemistry related to water quality or biogeochemistry.

LEVEL III

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Eight (8) years of related experience.
  • Including at least one year of experience performing analytical chemistry related to water quality or biogeochemistry.

ADDITIONAL REQUIRMENTS

  • Ability to independently complete seawater nutrient, organic matter and chlorophyll measurements at a level that meets laboratory quality standards.
  • Ability to work on an interdisciplinary research team.
  • Strong written and spoken communication skills.
  • Ability to conduct research tasks in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to lift moderately heavy objects.
  • Work beyond normal business hours and/or work on weekends as required by research projects.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master of Science degree in Environmental Science, Marine Science, or related field.
  • Two (2) or more years of professional experience working in a water quality laboratory.

SALARY: $4,461.50- $5,791.67 Approx. Monthly

($53,538 - $69,500 Approx. Annually)
